Meanwhile
Philosophically, I approve of the peaceful nature of the protest so far.
Pragmatically, I wonder how long it can continue. I previously said that the cops will eventually realise they're on the wrong side. I'm now starting to doubt that, and I'm wondering how long before the first group decides to fight back. Of course, as soon as that happens, no matter how justified or provoked the protesters were, that will be the end for the mainstream support for the occupy movement.
L0ckysays...He's essentially telling everyone to roll over.
I had my doubts, but now I don't see it playing out that way.
articiansays...I used to honestly think that Obama was simply so idealistic and naive that he actually believed the things he ran for office on, and when he got there he realized that there were powers and factors which he had never expected to encounter, and thus was unable to bring to fruition what he otherwise truly believed he could do.
I don't think a president could be lambasted for this many years and not see the reality of the situation though. This guy is a piece of shit. He is invested WAY TOO MUCH in this system, either by actually believing you can thrive here in the way he describes, or because he is just as much of a corporate property that the rest of the government has been for decades. I really believe, especially after seeing this clip, that the latter is true. "Rolling over" is a good way to put it, because he really does describe a situation where, and I know too many Americans who think this way, if you're employed and making money to pay the bills, everything is A-OKAY!
I am sick of seeing citizens of this country watch injustices around them, but excuse themselves from involvement on the basis of "hey, I'm gettin' mine, so what do I care?" This guy just wants you to go back to work so you can slip into that complacency that affects so many of us.
No. Please no. You will never have a peaceful and secure society as long as there are groups of individuals outside your realm of knowledge or influence that directly and irresponsibly control your life. Don't just take your crumbs and be happy with it. We live in an age where we can do so much more. So many greater things than just buying a new big screen and sitting with our fat buddies on Sunday to watch the football game (or whatever, I'm generalizing). We can have a responsible power structure, and this is just another excuse to not bother with trying.
America: Mediocre With a Passion
NetRunnersays...What video are you people watching?
Obama says "traditionally what held this country together was this notion that if you work hard, if you're playing by the rules, if you're responsible ... you've got a chance to succeed. But right now people feel like the deck is stacked against them..."
So...he's saying that why people are upset right now is because people feel like that
social contract"traditional notion" has broken down. He's not saying "If you're poor, and don't have a job, blame yourself." That was Herman Cain.
Seriously, are people in such a rage against Obama that even when he says stuff you agree with, you have to pretend he said the opposite?
peggedbeasays...I heard and understood what he said. but i am so upset with him that it all sounds like lip service.
i feel like maybe once, years ago, there was an obama with integrity. one who believed the shit he said. i dont think that's the guy we voted into office though. the guy in the office appears to be some kind of corporatist puppet who gives a really good speech every once in a while. whos really good at pretending that "the opposition" just outsmarted him or are too powerful to be beat. not that he just represents a softer, kinder side of the same corporately minted coin.
i bet the new guy really misses that old guy. i bet he's really lonely without him. i bet it really really sucks to be the president when it's possible that you're not actually a sociopath. >> ^NetRunner:

I guess I give him more credit. He's no FDR, but he's as left-wing of a President as we've had since Jimmy Carter.
I'm not as starry-eyed about him as I once was, but I think people on the left have let the corporate media brainwash them a bit too much with the "Obama = fail" meme.
Every victory he's had gets turned into "it was a failure because it should've been a bigger and better victory". Every real failure gets turned into intentional betrayal of principle.
I always get suspicious about only ever hearing one conclusion from people. I mean, for fuck's sake, liberals occasionally found some reason to applaud even Bush. Not so with Obama. Everything he does is apparently wrong, even when he succeeds in implementing some major policy goal. Now it seems that even an expression of sympathy for the Occupy movement in a high-visibility TV interview ticks people off.
I guess I just don't get it. I see a guy who hasn't been the Knight in Shining Armor we all wanted him to be, but he's made quite a lot of forward progress on things like health care reform, repealing DADT, even pulling out of Iraq.
Like I said, he's no FDR, but he's definitely on our side!

I absolutely see your point, I can see where my comment is misstating what I really intended to communicate. If I look at the Presidents comments differently, i.e. assuming the barest expectations of people and Americans, I understand his perspective and his comments better.
I suppose a better way to communicate my gripe is that he doesn't actually address the real issues. He's being "sympathetic" to the OWS protesters, but his statements do not give any weight to the actual issues. He doesn't acknowledge their grievances. (Maybe he can't, because OWS is such a mess anyway, regarding their fundamental message and goals. Still, "getting a job and getting ahead" is, and should not be, peoples highest goals in the United States.)
Every individual in the US is in a position to change the world for the better. Yes, I am an idealist.
Phreezdrydsays...Anybody living in the real world knows there's enough obstacles in life and at work to overcome. They don't need the additional worry that the people running things are sociopathic calculators, bent on squeezing them as hard as they can, and getting away with it. The shine on the whole "Hope" thing is peeling like gold foil off a shit sandwich.
