The ultimate return on investment of space flight can be debated, but standing under the main engines of the first stage of a Saturn V and trying to picture 7.5 million pounds of thrust coming at you, or imagining a capsule passing by your house at 5 miles/sec will always represent, to me, the pinnacle of human engineering. It gave me goosebumps as a kid and it still does.

Its almost enough to make a grown man cry, when you consider how much national funds are being spent importing energy from outside the US (Oil, gas, coal etc).

Its on the order of almost 90$BIL a year, all leaving the country, destined for the pockets of people who have no desire, nor capacity to further mankind in the way that a well funded national space agency can.

Add to that the cost of the war in order to secure other sources, its just sad that the govt. has failed at every level on getting energy independence.

That kind of cash money, since Apollo 11, could easily have us on Mars by now, and have improved the way of life for hundreds of millions, if not billions of people all over the planet.

Its an international human tragedy.
