It was too expensive to run, as it could only achieve top speed when a television crew was present.
The British public wouldn't accept the necessary increase of the BBC license fee.
Croccydilesays...I feel real geeky trying to follow the train path on Google Earth. Somewhat not surprisingly the path it takes (track layout) is almost identical to what is there today.
