Part 1 of Liana Kerzner's - "Why Feminist Frequency Almost Made Me Quit Writing"

http://metaleater.com/video-games/feature/why-feminist-frequency-almost-made-me-quit-writing-about-video-games-part-1

A true journalist & gamer Liana K discussed how after years of attempts to shatter her glass ceiling..

The Feminist Frequency narrative of women in games is what finally broke her spirit.

Her five part series goes on to critically analyze the actual issues which have sparked movements such as Gamer-Gate & Not-Your-Shield.

I came into this video expecting some very well written collegiate content. I was seriously excited about learning something new about modern social trends. I listened for 10 minutes, and then had to stop.

While it seems there is a lot of good ideas and potential, it seems like this is a semi eloquently written rant about someone's personal experiences, rather than a well researched piece of work. I would be much more interested in learning how much actual data and truth there is behind the strong statements she is making...the actual data and research is the grossly missing component here.

So, basically, she's not actually talking about how video games need to be more feminist oriented, but rather is more ranting about a website / domain called "Feminist Frequency" that is effectively a group of the college grade "MEN ARE EVIL PIGS" feminists, but hey grew up playing video games.

Actually not a bad read, although it drags in a few places.

It's a five part essay series, so it cover quite a bit.

This first part is the intro of course, so yes it sorta drags.

I strongly encourage you to listen/read all five parts.

She talks about stuff like:

- How hypersexualization of males in games is completely ignored.

- Cultivation Theory - and how's it be misrepresented to correlate and/or assert hypersexualization with an increase in misogyny/rapist behavior.

[When in fact, the theory states that an audience would simply perceive the world as more sexualized than it really is.]

- The difficulties she's faced in being taken seriously as a female games journalist for over a decade..

- And how it's bullshit that youtube sensationalism allows less legitimate & disreputable "journalists"..

to drown out the voices of much better, tempered analysis/commentary.

I listened to the entire series while playing Age of Wonder 3.

w00t! woot! go games! Have fun!

Explain, enoch, for I was raised on the "Dog and Pony Show" metaphor. The same, right?

Regardless, intelligent people know the score, (equality being the goal) and this is just rumination for the rest of us stuck on the elementary belief system.
I do have some sympathy for her when it comes to the situation of an agreeable ally who honestly and evenly criticizes their peers. It's sad that she was attacked by the group she's commenting on just for pointing out valid points, when an alternate female perspective is the best thing for them.

If you're interested in the commentary it's worth a listen, but it's just counterpoint and monologue to an ongoing civil argument that most have already formed an opinion about.

enochsaid:

this is all bread and circuses my friends..bread and circuses.

@artician yep, very similar in that they both point to the distraction of the common folk from the far more pressing issues.

which brings me to directly address @GenjiKilpatrick 's question.simply put:the whole kerfuffle.i liked how this woman laid it out and respect how she approaches controversial material but it is not enough to draw me in or get me invested in some way, because there are far more vicious and savage events happening in the world today for me to take this seriously.

i am sure it is quite important to those involved and it may, possibly have some sort of merit but basically:first world problems.

RedSkysays...

This whole kerfuffle is so pointless. Big budgets games are mostly bought by males so developers target them to males. Somer are androgynous (e.g. Bioware), some bland, alpha male and a-feminine (Call of Duty) and a few arguably stereotypically caricaturing of women (GTA).

If you publish a strong opinion on the internet and it garners attention, you will attract trolls. Surprise! The internet is full of assholes and bigots of all kinds not just mysoginists.

As far as casual or mobiles games, women already outnumber men. As games become culturally accepted entertainment for women, mobile games gravitate to bigger screens with faster chips, a more significant market for big budget games targeted at women will develop. There, end of story.
