GenjiKilpatricksays...Sounds like the perfect plot for a "crazy killer continues to murder from beyond the grave" movie =]
Stormsingersays...No, absolutely not. I rarely make slippery slope arguments, but in this case, I will. I never want to give our system incentive to kill yet more citizens. Start this process, and it won't take long before we see minor crimes getting capitol sentences. The influence of the super-rich, who have the longest lifespans and thus the greatest chance to need (and can afford) transplants, will ensure it.
Fusionautsays...@Stormsinger speaks the truth. This reminds me of a Larry Niven short story about a man who is sentenced to die so that his organs may be harvested. In the end it is revealed that he was convicted for running a red light.
There is a constant need for fresh organs. If organs are to be harvested from death row inmates, and the current 'stock' does not meet the current demand then all that needs to be done is extend the death sentence to more crimes. Where should the line be drawn? Will parking tickets eventually warrant a death penalty?
The divide between the rich and poor is growing ever larger and the rich will always be able to pay for the organs they need in order to extend/improve their own life. It is the rich who influence the government and the laws it makes. Does making organ harvesting legal make it ethical as well?
To me, the obvious solution is to have no death penalty, and if an in-mate wishes to donate his organs then they can be donated when he dies from causes other than execution.
dystopianfuturetodaysays...45 people have been executed this year.

Utah still uses a firing squad.
6 more executions are scheduled for this year.
1233 people have been executed since they started keeping track in 1976.

gwiz665says...Let the inmate choose. If he chooses to donate his organs, they could anesthetize him instead of a lethal injection and remove the organs for use.
As long as it's the inmate's choice, I have no problem with it.

csnel3says...I read somewhere that China gets most of their organs from executed prisoners. They execute more people than any other country. I also hear they DNA sample all the peasants and if someone can afford an organ they will know where to find a match.
Didnt Steve Jobs go to China for his liver? He sure got it fast, I wonder if it was given by a volunteer?
blankfistsays...No. We should just not execute people.
GeeSussFreeKsays...Isn't this the same argument for embryonic steam cells? Since you're already doing it, harvest it?
hpqpsays...Can't watch because "private".
