I remember a story about a drunk in Anchorage who wandered out on to the mud flats (like quick sand) in Anchorage - he got stuck like that and they called in a helicopter. The tied a line around his chest to pull him out with the chopper, unfortunately, only his top half came unstuck. His bottom half stayed in the mud. He ... did not survive.
Same flats, a lady on her honeymoon was slowly sinking in, rescue crew was all around her, and her husband too - she kept sinking, even with all of the rescue workers trying their best. As it got up to her face, they put a straw in her mouth. Her eyes were the last thing to go ... her husband got to say goodbye at least.
Not to be fucked with, this stuff.
SevenFingerscouldn't they have just tied a rope around the woman to stop her from sinking more? (I'm sure at the time maybe the materials weren't available but still...)

IIRC, it happened so quickly and the suction was so strong, that there was only time for desperate measures to try and save her.
What a way to go. I would rather be eaten by a shark.

direpickleIt ought to be impossible for a person to actually sink completely into quicksand. Do you know what's different about the mud flats?

Maybe I'm slightly misremembering - the lady who died might not have been covered by mud, but instead the incoming tide. http://mudflats.wordpress.com/actual-mudflat-stories/

nanrodThe lesson to be learned is to get out of the quicksand as soon as you're aware of it and not stand there for 8 minutes until you're up to your waist.
direpickleAah, yeah, that I buy. That's terrifying.
