Yeah, the movie's barrel multikill part of the river race took away from the believability of the story, until it went so far that it became it's own little fictional mini-game, so I believed it again, but then it took THAT too far so I AGAIN entered into more disbelief.

I was really surprised that they didn't end with the death of Smaug. That seems like the ideal climax to end on. They should have cut the battle with Smaug in Erebor shorter and gotten to the attack on Laketown and his death, finishing up the whole Smaug storyline and moving on to the Battle of Five Armies in part 3.
