Empowering a person to connect with and help others in a similar situation is much more useful than money.

Give a man a fish, he can eat for a day...

Give a man a flipcam, he can film a documentary about homeless people. Have it somehow go viral. Become popular enough to earn some money off the production and distribution. Buy himself his first computer. Connect to the internet and become a member of the videosift community. Where he creates the avatar name Unsung_Hero so he remembers his roots and where he came from.

That man sounds exactly like Henry Phillips, only more upbeat.
