gwaansays...Great post - that's some serious calamari!
I saw this in a paper but hadn't seen any pictures of it. I would love to see some good footage of a colossal squid alive in its natural habitat
LadyBugsays...me too, gwaan ... but sadly, this one is now frozen!
supposedly, if they made some yummy calamari out of this one ... they would be the size of tractor tires!! lol
swampgirlsays...Kitties loooove squid jerky. Just thought I'd add that.
rossprudensays...No upvote due to improper usage of "it's", which is a contraction of "it is". As such, this video has been tagged on The It's Hit List:

cobaltsays...Also they missed an apostrophe. It should have been "the Sperm Whales' most fearsome predator!" Not to mention that they capitalised predator and used three exclamation marks.
LadyBugsays...nice to know an apostrophe stopped you from appreciating, voting for, and commenting on such a rare scientific discovery! *two thumbs up *
rembarsays...Darnit, LadyBug! Wanted to sift this meself...nice one, though.
...seriously guys, you honestly aren't upvoting because of a few petty grammar mistakes? Fer fuck's sake. C'mon.

couplandsays...This wins the prize for most unfortunate thumbnail.
Also, just to point out: several of the stills, particularly of the squid sprawled out indoors on a table, are from a partly deteriorated dead squid recovered a year or two ago, they're not from 2007. Not that it detracts at all from what is still a very cool subject.
spoco2says...Not upvoting due to the huge amount of misinformation in this. Not only does it initially try to suggest that only now do we know of colossal squids, but then it goes on to show many photos of one found a long time ago... 2004/5 I believe.
So, yes, the squid found recently is apparently the largest yet found, but it in no way has suddenly proved the existence of a mythical beast once only thought to be legend...

aidossays...Even more interesting is the evolution of BBC squid pictures. I noticed these the other day whilst trying to figure out how the size diagram related in any way to the squid in question.
rossprudensays...Yeah, I know it sounds silly, but there are a few grammatical mistakes -- like confusing "its" with "it's" -- which are subtle enough to eventually slip into common usage if someone doesn't take a stand to correct them. Sure, languages evolve, but there is a line in the sand here -- "it's" isn't a matter of style, but a rule of grammar.
I probably sound like a priggish fool... *sigh* I guess I'm okay with that if it means anyone who reads this thinks twice about using "it's" in their writing!
