Half-ton colossal squid hauled from Antarctic deep!

A fishing crew has caught a colossal squid that could weigh a half-ton and prove to be the biggest specimen ever landed, a fisheries official said Thursday Feb 18, 2007.

The squid, weighing an estimated 990 pounds and about 39 feet long, took two hours to land in Antarctic waters, New Zealand Fisheries Minister Jim Anderton said.

The fishermen were catching Patagonian toothfish south of New Zealand "and the squid was eating a hooked toothfish when it was hauled from the deep," Anderton said.

Great post - that's some serious calamari!

I saw this in a paper but hadn't seen any pictures of it. I would love to see some good footage of a colossal squid alive in its natural habitat

This wins the prize for most unfortunate thumbnail.

Also, just to point out: several of the stills, particularly of the squid sprawled out indoors on a table, are from a partly deteriorated dead squid recovered a year or two ago, they're not from 2007. Not that it detracts at all from what is still a very cool subject.

Not upvoting due to the huge amount of misinformation in this. Not only does it initially try to suggest that only now do we know of colossal squids, but then it goes on to show many photos of one found a long time ago... 2004/5 I believe.

So, yes, the squid found recently is apparently the largest yet found, but it in no way has suddenly proved the existence of a mythical beast once only thought to be legend...

Yeah, I know it sounds silly, but there are a few grammatical mistakes -- like confusing "its" with "it's" -- which are subtle enough to eventually slip into common usage if someone doesn't take a stand to correct them. Sure, languages evolve, but there is a line in the sand here -- "it's" isn't a matter of style, but a rule of grammar.

I probably sound like a priggish fool... *sigh* I guess I'm okay with that if it means anyone who reads this thinks twice about using "it's" in their writing!
