From Gizmodo.com:
"According to Merriam Webster fulguration means "the act or process of flashing like lightning" and that's kind of the principle behind artist Julius von Bismarck's device. It's a reactive flash image-projector... or, to put it another way, a real-world hack of other people's photos. Sounds sinister, looks sinister... works great. Adapted from a flash gun and an old SLR, it senses the flash of someone's camera, and then quickly illuminates itself, projecting images or text onto the object that was being snapped. The video of bemused tourists in Berlin, peering in confusion at the screen of their digicams is priceless.
Julius' web page says one of the reasons he built the gizmo (currently being patented) was to challenge the high confidence that people have that their photos are accurate captures of reality. And though, as Ghost in the Shell fans will admit, it's no sophisticated Laughing Man hack, I love it for the fact that it's a physical trick as opposed to a digital one. srdsays...The concept is neat. But using it to annoy people who are trying to take home memories of a vacation seems rather juvenile to me. Using it to make political statements at a press conference or the like, now that would rock.
NordlichReitersays...I don't use a flash nor do I use a digital, so hah! Traditional film, although.. I could use a new studio, and a better scanner.
lucky760says...The video is rather frustrating for its lack of explanation about everything.
Mostly irrelevant, but what does the the text say that he's flashing on the sign? I certainly couldn't read it.
srdsays...It says "Hundreds of people died last year by trying this at the US-Mexico border".
dw1117says...Awesome device, not very good editing/content in terms of video. The first min is a waste.
Rottysays...Nothing that a Louisville Slugger can't cure.
srdsays...I was puzzled how this contraption was supposed to work, since I didn't see the counter flash. The exploded diagram in the last few seconds explained more than the rest of the video together.
spoco2says...Yeah, this wouldn't hurt my photos either as I use flash as little as humanly possible (natural light almost always looks better).
But neat trick... neat.
And it's not like he's 'ruining' anyone's photos, you can still read the original sign, you can still see everything else, it just has an overlay now.
FishBulbsays...Hmmm. The message I foresee this device being used for is "(C) Copyright..."
MINKsays...the first rule of advanced amateur photography is:
1. Boast about never using flash, as if all the professional photographers in the world are just idiots and you have found the SECRET that they will never know.
