I thought I remembered from school or something that what comes out of the refining process that is used to make gasoline is pretty much useless by itself because it explodes too violently to be useful. It wasn't until other stuff (octane) as added to it to slow down the explosion into a usable combustion product.

Making obvious my ignorance of science in my formative years, why exactly is a fuel combustion not an explosion?

According to wikipedia, a combustion is the reaction of an oxidant and fuel to create heat and light involving a chemical change whereas is a rapid increase in volume and release of energy potentially caused by a chemical reaction.

Isn't that in some cases ... the same thing?
