Gamer Lingo: Welcome to the Secret Society

From the video: "If there's anything we learned from this lesson it's that trying to have a conversation with a gamer makes you just want to curl up and QQ."

Makes it look like WoW players are incapable of normal conversation. Anybody who tries to use jargon to talk to somebody who doesn't play the game is an idiot, regardless of whether they are a gamer or not. Some of us have college degrees and normal full-time jobs.

Plus, "LFM 25 nex 2 more tanks 2 more DKs" does NOT mean "I need help". It means "We're trying to put together a team of twenty-five people to attack the Nexus. We need two more people who will hold the enemy's attention and two more Death Knights."

And "kek" is not how you laugh, it's an in-joke.

And only real assholes use QQ. It's for cold-hearted taunting of other players.

And I've never heard anybody referred to as a Timmy. Maybe that's just a joke on his server.

All in all, this report is full of dumb shit that might be funny if it was directed at gamers instead of non-gamers.

I guess I'm an asshole because I tell people to go QQ all the time. And kek, from my experience, evolved from a cross-faction joke into normal conversation.

I've heard of Timmys, but that's because I've spent more hours on the forums than I care to remember. If I remember correctly, that leaked in from some "other" strange culture.

All in all, this video is funny to me as parody; have you ever seen the media display our "rich culture" as anything other than insipid, immoral or, in this case, moronic?

Timmy: Non existent term. He made that up on the spot.

"I NEED HELP" .. she's an idiot.

LFM: Looking for more, implying that there is already part of a group assembled.

25 Nex: Makes no sense, they must mean 25 Naxx, which is a raid dungeon that you can attack as 25 people. (Nexus is a 5-man instance)

2 more tanks, 2 more DK: long story short, a tank is the one that takes the punishment from bosses and the like in dungeons. Death knight is a special class.

He is also an idiot.

Ponzor does not exist, he must have warped it from pwn, own and just amalgamated his own version. (see the line above)

Kek is an in-joke, like 1337-speak. I think it originated in korean Starcraft games, where koreans apparently say kekek instead of lol (laugh out loud).

QQ is very right. If you want to see examples of this visit the rogue forums on wow.com; it's basically what they do. (It comes from a smiley like 0_0.. a Q looks like a crying eye.)

Flap? Fap? What's he saying? Heard of Fap, but I don't think that's what he said.

"5 capped AB", you don't really say that. But AB (Arathi Basin) is a battleground, which requires you to capture "bases" on a map, while you have any number of "bases", you generate a number of points. The more you have the faster. The game ends at 2000 points. So, he capped all 5 bases in two minutes. (An almost unachievable feat, unless there is almost no one on the opposing team.)
This is not something to be particularly proud of, because unless you've never played the game before, you can do this several times a day, if the opponents are particularly weak.)

"pwnzor'd Wintergrasp with 40 people" ugh.. I mean.. ugh. He's an idiot.

I'm getting way too into this. I better go throw a football around or something.

This just screams, "Hey, lowly intern reporter, please go find a story." So she goes and interviews her boyfriend, who is a moron.

Also: LFM nex? Nexus doesn't have a 25-man version. He either said Naxx and they transcribed the subtitles wrong, or he meant 25-man Malygos and he's an idiot.

And also also... people with more time than I have scoured the screens shown in the game clips and have determined that he is "Oompa" in Good Fellas II on the Greymane server. This guild is ranked 11 on that server, so he's hardly the "top 10 player out of 12 million people" playing WoW.

Heh. I want to see them do a story on how strangely radio enthusiasts talk, because they're just as unintelligible to someone not familiar with the lingo.

WTF!! ZOMG!!! Such nubsauce. GG imo.

WTS WoW Vernacular, PST.

ummm...

amg?

As a WoW player, I am clearly outraged.

What's sad, is that the gist of this video is totally true. My friends at work and I are always having WoW conversations where we constantly throw around WoW-specific terms that we are comfortable with. I'm sure non-players do feel like it's sort of a second language.
