Game Trailers World of Warcraft "Cataclysm" Review

This one goes out to Ant and the inevitable Videosift Guild.

Gamespot, meh, IGN, whatever, AVault - they're still around?! shacknews... warmer... that brit with his sarcasm and cartoons? Maybe. There are only a couple of reviewing institutions I trust - Ars Technica and this guy from Game Trailers and I think he hit this review spot on.

But, I don't need a review. I already played through Hyjal and it was so amazing that I played through the other end game *starting* zone, the underwater zone Vashj'ir. Which is a whole other sort of amazing. The expansion is actually much better than what I was expecting unlike Starcraft II which I find to be lacking (probably until it's expansion, right?).

*Edit: The only thing I disagree in this review is Burning Crusade. Definitely, the quests for the most part suck - but leveling is simple. I stayed in Blasted Lands until 59 or 60 because the zone and new quests were done so well that I wanted to complete them all instead of moving forward through the Dark Portal. Once I went through leveling was a cinch - I think I ran instances 10-15 times and completed a couple of quests in a few zones before I reached 68 and able to move into Northrend. Leveling is much quicker and it is easy to get flying mounts unlike the first time you ran through BC. So, it could be reworked but I honestly did not spend much time in BC... though it felt like a big, sucky but quick mess to get out of.

Its amazing how much hard work people put themselves through to play WoW.

I've tried it multiple times on various trials and offers and each time I burn out somewhere in the mid20s. Leveling just isn't fun, too much of that game seems boring and repetitive. It frustrates me that they go to so much effort to great such a amazing vast world but then fail to make the gameplay or leveling etc at all engaging. And then they ask you to pay for it.

To enjoy SC2 I think you really have to enjoy playing games competitively. Its nowhere near the vastness of WoW and it just doesn't offer the same escapism, but the adrenaline rush I get from winning SC2 games is really beyond compare. I haven't even completed the campaign, the only progression I care about is ladder ranking.

Different games for different gamers I guess. Got fingers crossed for Guild Wars 2 though.

While playing the new content, my wife said to me "I can't believe I even played this game before." That's how good the new content is.

I have to admit, I look back at the original game, and I wonder the same thing.

I agree this new WoW is pretty much spectacular. Even if they took out the instances (my favorite part of the game), the battlegrounds, the raids and even the multiplayer I think this game would be fun to play.

The amount of content is just immense. Vashj'ir is just massive - it works on horizontal & vertical levels, it's really neat. I was initially sort of annoyed with the zone so went to Hyjal - after I completed Hyjal (and it was so good) - I just had to back to Vash and see what it contained. Just like Hyjal - Vash starts out a little... slow - you just have to realize that you have to get over some of the humps and the game really opens up - soon I was on the seahorse mount zipping around the massive zone. Just exploring the vastness of Vashj'ir was fun - the entrance to the Throne of Tides instance was really neat. The amount of detail is just staggering and some of the set pieces in the zone and story set pieces are very unique. I've definitely put in around 10-15 hours and I'm still not even level 83, haven't even moved on from the two starting zones - though I have explored some of the other zones to find instance entrances, though I haven't even begun to play in any of the instances either. Exploring is neat unto itself but the stories Blizzard have crafted will take you in & outside of the immediate zone - the phasing will constantly be changing the landscapes.

I really enjoyed fighting the raid bosses connected to the quests, even, though I wish they played out more like regular raid bosses (ie. they're a bit too forgiving). Anyway, I still have three zones to go and I'm taking my time loving almost every second.
