Fmr MI5 Analyst: Wars on Terror/Drugs just Means to an End

Based on her own experiences as an Intelligence Officer for MI5 (the UK domestic security service) and a whistleblower, Annie Machon will talk about the relationships between the wars on 'terror', drugs, whistleblowers, and the internet, and suggest some ideas about what we can do.

President Eisenhower coined the phrase "the military-industrial complex". He recognised that conflict was good for business, and this had implications for future security. He was prescient. After the racial war was won in the USA, they announced the "war on drugs" which has disproportionately hit ethnic communities in America; as the Soviet threat receded, so the Islamist threat came to prominence; and as the free flow of information spread over the internet, so the fight-back began with the copyright wars, surveillance, and the crackdown on whistleblowers and organisations such as Wikileaks. We are now facing the "military-security complex" and an unending, if nebulous, war on concepts.

What can we do about it?

I just cant watch these videos anymore. After 5 mins max I get tears in my eyes when I think about the people not caring what is happening, even though there were so many warnings in history, and now we even have hard hard facts.
People just dont care. Once again, humanity proves, that its too stupid to learn from history. And I honestly cant call anyone an intelligent being, who isnt even able to learn from simple history that EVERYONE learns in school, nor reacts properly to actual happenings.

She can promote whistle blowing as much as she wants, if the VAST VAST majority doesnt care, its no use.

This is really the main problem we face. Just because many people don't care doesn't mean that they can't, however. I know I never used to care, it takes time to learn what's going on and what the real issues are. So there's definitely hope. The biggest challenge I think any resistance will have is how to organise - as pointed out in the vid, pretty much any groups get infiltrated, everyone is spied on in every country if they use digital communications, and well, what do you do about that, I don't know,

I have experienced enormous difficulties trying to keep people engaged.

It was particularly obvious to me when I returned from the 30C3 and talked to my friends about the most important shit I learned over the weekend. They are techies, the lot of 'em, and everyone is keenly aware of the Snowden revelations and their implications.

Yet after 6 months of this, the only ones still paying attention for more than 2 minutes at a time are the folks who don't blank out when I mention ephemeral elliptic curve Diffie–Hellman, aka wierd people.

In order to keep all my non-wierd friends, colleagues and acquaintances engaged, I started to discard any non-encrypted email sent to my private address as well as any calls to my cell without RedPhone after three months of warnings. People can still leave a message on my landline if they can't get their shit together.

But the point is: if even my friends (nearly all in IT) have a hard time dealing with the ongoing and ever more depressing revelations, how can I blame the family down the street for not being indignant about it...

You remind me of two of my favorite quotes though:

If we've learnt anything from history, it is that we never learn anything from history.

The belief that enhanced understanding will necessarily stir a nation to action is one of mankind's oldest illusions.

I don't have any answers, but I can share the depression with you . Also, those of us fortunate enough to be born in the west are living the life of kings historically speaking.

Those are pretty old quotes. Since we live in the age of information, where Information is extremely easy to acquire, I think its fair to give humanity another chance on this aspect. But my hopes are low, as you may have guessed from my first comment.
