A hyper-realistic Einstein robot at the University of California, San Diego learned to smile and make facial expressions through a process of self-guided learning. That's cool, but is this actually useful? If they're hoping to have robots act as information kiosks or greeters at Walmart, it seems like the AI is the important part, and people would be just as happy to interact with a virtual representation of a face on an LCD screen.
