“Desert Goddess” Remembers Arizona’s Glen Canyon

When the Glen Canyon Dam was approved in April 1956, a group of archeologists and river runners set out to document more than 250 culturally significant sites and 125 side canyons that would be flooded by the project. One of those river runners was Katie Lee, a folk singer and Hollywood starlet turned activist. As she describes, "We would go around a corner, and spread out before us would be this incredible site ... Everything was in the right position; everything was perfect."

It's heartbreaking to see what we've permanently destroyed in our efforts to control water, exponentially more so when you think how we've squandered the water and power the project(s) produced.

Not sure how this is permanently destroyed by being underwater for 60 years. Yes some human artefacts may be gone but if they knocked that damn down now I'm pretty positive the rocks won't have changed much.

The highly specialized, unique ecosystems that existed there are gone forever.
...and many of the gorgeous slot canyons (pun intended) are permanently filled in with silt.
