Dave Grohl, Joshua Homme, Trent Reznor - Mantra (from film)

A little fragment from Dave Grohl's film Sound City. Sounds really interesting.

Really looking forward to this, but I'm a bit saddened by Trent's view at the end.

"now that everyone is empowered with these tools to create stuff, has there been a lot more great shit coming out? Not really..."

It does make him seem a little out of touch, and I'm a little worried that the whole documentary will come across as a bunch of formerly excellent 90's rockers who couldn't keep up, and now hark back to the good old days of "real music".

I think you and I are perceiving what he's saying differently. Whereas you're interpreting it as more him being cynical about the current state of music, what I hear is him saying that the technology doesn't make the music.

As he says "You still have to have something to do with those tools".

Just because it's there doesn't make the music better, it's there to help as an instrument, not be used as a crutch.

I agree completely with that sentiment, and that is his main message but my contention is with Trent saying there hasn't been much of it. I completely disagree.

Nirvana, Foo Fighters, NiN were prominent in "the soundtrack of my youth", and QotSA a little later. I still listen to all of them from time to time and have a lot of respect for their music.

To say there hasn't been "much" great music that makes use of the new technologies that have come about just doesn't fly with me. I've listened to loads of great music over the past decade; much of which is decidedly electronica, let alone just incorporating digital effects.

If he wasn't cynical then he should have said "you still need musical talent to back this up; and that's why there's so much great shit coming out".

I think his point was that, even though there's a plethora of new tools, we're still seeing roughly the same output that we always saw. The availability of these tools has not increased the number of musicians, because a musician is not simply someone who can buy Pro Tools; a musician is an artist with a vision and a message.

As for Trent being "formerly great", I can only guess you stopped listening with The Fragile, because he just keeps getting better.

I think you might be right. Let's wait until it's released

I haven't listened to NiN since With Teeth, didn't realise how long ago that was. Will give the newer stuff a try,

I wasn't saying they are actually "formerly great", I was just worried that's how they were coming across; though having relistened to the whole Foo Fighters catalogue recently that might actually apply to Dave Grohl
