One of eclectic songstress, Victoria Williams' best, covered famously by Pearl Jam. She's an overlooked gem.
Lyrics-
She lived on a curve in the road
In an old tar paper shack.
On the south side of the town
On the wrong side of the tracks.
Sometimes on the way into town
We'd say, "Mama can we stop and give her a ride?"
Sometimes we did
she shook her head and her hands flew from her side.
Wild eyed
Crazy Mary.
Down a long dirt road
Past the Parson's place.
The old blue car
We used to race.
To a little country store with a sign tacked to the side.
Said 'NO L-O-I-T-E-R-I-N-G ALLOWED.'
Underneath that sign always congregated quite a crowd.
Take a bottle drink it down. Pass it around.
Take a bottle drink it down. Drink it... Pass it around. Pass ita...
A-take a bottle drink it down. Pass it... Pass it a... Pass itaround.
One night thunder cracked
Mercy backed outside my windowsill.
Dreamed I was flying high
Above the trees and over the hills.
Looked down into the house of Mary.
A bare bulb hung there,
Newspaper covered walls.
And Mary rising up above it all.
Oh... Oh... Oh...
Next morning on the way into town
We saw some skid marks and followed them around.
Over the curve,
Through the field,
Into the house of Mary.
that what you fear most, could meet you halfway,
that what you fear most, can meet you halfway,
Take a bottle drink it down. Pass it around.
Take a bottle drink it down. Pass it... Pass it around. Pass ita...
Take a bottle drink it down. Pass it... Pass it a... Pass itaround.
Oh, pass it a... Pass it arround. Pass it a... Pass it a... Passit a...
Oh yeah.

kronosposeidonsays...Wow, I never knew this was a cover tune, and I'm a big Pearl Jam fan too. Great pick. And being agnostic I don't normally go for religious crap, but this certainly ain't crap. And I normally don't care for country or country-ish music either. Yet again, this song grabs me by the shirt collars and says "Pay attention! That is, if you want to call yourself a member of the human race".
I hope this gets sifted.
snoozedoctorsays...I stand in awe of those who put words and music together in a seamless fashion. The truly great songwriters nail the message of a song right to the mood created by the music.
