Chinese Man Throws Bicycle at Thieves

Two thieves on a motor-scooter flew by and snatched a womans purse on a street in Wenzhou, China. Surveillance video shows a man riding a bicycle. As he was passing by the front of a hotel near where the thievery happened, he stopped, calmly got off his bicycle, picked it up, and then threw it at the thieves. The bicycle hit them, they lost control, and crashed to the ground.

Quick thinking, and a good idea as far as I'm concerned! I imagine that if you did this in the US you'd probably get in much more legal trouble than the thieves, though.

I was a bit confused at first by the different camera sections. Does this sound right?:
From the different video viewpoints, I think that the bicycle thrower witnessed the theft, stopped, tossed the bike and hit/crashed the thieves scooter, approached the wreck to reclaim the stolen purse, and then was dismayed when both thieves seemed to be in good enough condition to fight, so he ran away. The thieves seemed to threaten, but both ran the opposite direction almost immediately. Then it cuts to another viewpoint, and it gets more confusing. I think that they run into a second bystander who attacks and knocks the purse out of their hands. The second bystander seems to be fully ready and able to take on both thieves, but the video is cut pretty short there and then cuts to someone recovering the purse and moving back in the direction where the theft occurred. That seem accurate?

It looks like a little time passed between the two shots. In the second shot it looks like the two thieves have picked the scooter up in attempt to use it to get away and then they see the patrol car coming and they drop it and take off running. That when someone else smacks the one with the purse as they try to get away. You see the purse fly to the side and then in the next cut someone walking over to pick it up to return it.

Gotta love the ridiculous # of security cameras in China. Also funny - the guy running away after. There's *fail going on here (either on the thievery part, or the initial fight as MilkmanDan succinctly analyzes), just not sure on whose part...

Good team work from the bystanders.
I don't see the fail in this. The bicycle guy did not risk it when he saw those guys were not hurt. Nobody wants to get himself killed for a purse. Also the thieves could not have foreseen a bicycle trowing hero.

Chinese are scarily brutal toward thieves. theync has plenty of videos of caught thieves murdered right on the street w/ people idly standing-by watching. no due-process.

I think the general lack of due process in the Chinese legal system makes vigilante violence more tolerable.

I always wished I would do something like that if I witnessed a similar situation. But these things happen so fast and unexpectedly that I'm pretty sure I would still be picking my jaw up off the ground as they sped off.

Kudos to the dude in the video. (or however you spell it)

Well, purse robbery fail for starters, as I point out above. You can't argue it's not fail because they didn't plan on failing... that's kind of the whole point, you do realize.

My moment of heroism:

I was walking past my university main building on my way in to uni that morning. There's areas in england where the road connects to a bicycle path on the pavement (sidewalklol). It's marked in red and separated by a small kerbstone from the pedestrian part of the pavement. Cyclists are SUPPOSED to be carefull when joining these from the road to make sure they don't hit the peds and vice versa. It usually occurs around complicated roundabouts where bikes can get the shaft.

Ok, so there's a girl walking along, about to step into the red area, she's checked the road which was clear from her view. I saw a bike come out of a side street very fast, swing round and go straight onto the pavement colliding HARD with the girl.

So i stopped and waited to see if all was well, she got up and was clearly shocked but started walking away as the big guy on the bike started going "OI YOU, COME HERE. NO DON'T WALK AWAY, GET HERE NOW." This girl really wasn't sure what to do, she was so intimidated by this guy and she was caught between running away and standing still. This guy seemed really unhappy about hitting her and coming off his bike, he had no regard for if she was ok, just the fact that he wasn't ok and his bike wasn't ok.

So the second time he yelled "COME HERE!" I decided to get involved. I yelled at him "Leave her alone you idiot!" And marched right over to him (oh i can be quite brave when i'm annoyed at someone). He stopped yelling but still didn't want to lose the girl. "No don't walk away, come back here," he said. So i said "No, if she wants to go she can go where she likes." At which point, she legged it, clearly scared.

So the guy turns his attention to me now and said "She's just walked right into me!" So i say "No, i saw the incident, dickhead, you're meant to be a lot more careful."

He said "So who's going to pay to fix my bike then?" So i told him i'd take a look at it for him, cos i'm a cyclist myself.

This is when the reason for him not wanting the girl to walk off became apparent - it was a reasonably expensive racing bike, and where he'd fallen, he was going so fast that the handlebars which normally look like -.- (best i can do) had been COMPLETELY bent over so it almost touched the other side, so it looked like this =.

My solution? I laughed and said "Oh i can't fix that hahaha." And off i went.

I don't have a big problem with that. I'd like to bring back a bit of the Wild West. Some people seem awfully quick to fuck with other people these days, I guess because they figure they can get away with it.
