China's Booming Sex Industry

This is definitely one of the best pods we've seen on China's sex workers so far. Laura Ling of Current TV, goes around China and finds that the sex trade, while virtually non-existent 25 years ago, is now booming everywhere. She also almost got into trouble with some local mafia (which brought back some nasty flashbacks of our own encounters with them a few years ago), but fortunately she got away with it and her tape! Good documentary...

Strange that what amuses me the most is the entire "surprised, revelation" feeling of Laura...I mean, pick any country in East Asia. Any country. The sex industry scene is all the same.

Not even just East Asia. Try anywhere in the world. I think the conditions of it can be awful and sad, but I think it's naive when people are shocked and surprised or feel like it's something that can or should be eliminated. For better or worse, I think prostitution is part of the human equation. There's a demand for it that will never go away, so the only question is how to make it as safe as possible.

Strange that the shop at 6:52 says hot pot Si Chuan (Stinging spicy) style. Not really evidence that the woman inside is a sex worker, she could be cooking for all I could see.

Also, it could be true that the woman who closed the door later on is a sex worker, but if I had someone pointing a video camera at me in the middle of the night for no apparent reason, I'd probably close the door (or tell them to #$%^ off) too.

Getting a prostitute in China is way easier than how she makes it to be. All you need is a room in a hotel, and they'll start calling you. Now I have to tell the hotel concierge not to forward any calls in order to avoid that.
