SnakePlisskensays...File this one under "We don't actually see anyone die, so it's cool."
pho3n1xsays...obviously the hiroshima footage is the same way...
aircrash - 10+ deaths, lets make a stink.
nuclear bomb - 500,000+ deaths, it's cool...
iran/iraq footage - we only see the dead bodies, not the moment of death, so it must be cool too.
Kruposays...We've had pretty lively discussions on the blog about what is and is not verboten under the no snuff policy - check it out.

SnakePlisskensays...I think it just comes down to the potential entertainment value of watching an aircrash in which people very probably died.
For me there is none, although I respect the fact that everyone has their own tastes.
Kruposays...The issue, though, is whether you're watching it for the destruction to people, or machinery.
There's a different sort of thrill from watching machines crack up.
SnakePlisskensays...Oh I getcha. I wish I could put on blinders to the plight of the people travelling inside the machinery.
Actually, when I think about it... I'm kind of glad I don't have that ability.
Do you also rubberneck car-wrecks and go "Ohhh... Look at the shape of that fender!" without a thought for the passengers?
I guess I'm just throwing in my 2c on the "snuff" debate. I don't mean this to appear as a personal stab, Krupo.
Kruposays...LOL, it's cool, I totally understand your POV, just sharing mine. We sometimes have the 'funnest' debates on VS, I find.
If this was a chopper crash, I'd agree, b/c my amateur online flight simming makes it obvious to me how lethal that can be.
While this had the potential to be lethal, esp with the explosion, the fuselage looked intact at the end, lending me enough thought to believe that it was survivable.
Same idea with car crashes - I *will* go "eeeeeiiieee" when I see photage of a horrific wreck. Sometimes you'll see a bloody smear, and it's downright sobering. Conversely, sometimes the car's a write-off and yet the people walk away.
It's both amazing and a reason to pause for thought.
If anything, exposure to the reality of car crashes can be a wake-up call to people with a propensity to drive recklessly to be a bit more careful - people have an unfortunate tendency to feel 'indesctructible'... you can rightly argue that exposing them to factors - including crash videos - which temper their Need for Speed is a Good Thing.

Completely unrelated sidenote: I just noticed ender has hit 2000 votes. Since that meaningless fact will be oblierated in as soon as a few seconds, I thought I'd point it out now and celebrate it...
phelixiansays...It appeared to me that everyone survived this crash. The car crash that spawned the snuff video discussion was less hopefull. This just looked interesting to me. I'm not in anyway for videos that show human loss, for the record.
Kruposays...It's cool phelixian, we're just conducting a high level meta debate on the comment page for your video; nothing directly on you.
burhansays...I think there are classicaly, there were essentially two types of snuff films. The first is a film that is obviously edited (captions, music, etc) for shock value. THe second kind is more of a subjective valuation. Ie. if one looks at stock footage of death/destruction just for the sake of it, rather than a legitimate reason such as investigation. However, the randomness of the crash videos here kind of deconstructs those into something more difficult to determine. It might be enough to just notice how one is watching a plane crash...see if it provokes compassion or mayhem-lust. That might be a good indicator if you've made it your own personal snuff film.
doomie77says...Look at the video.....the pilot did a superb job of landing the craft. He deserves a medal for being able to keep the plane as intact as he did.
This was very interesting to me.
Wepwawetsays...This was a deHavilland DHC-5 Buffalo that crashed at the 1984 Farnbrough Airshow. The plane was a military STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) transport, and while demonstrating the short landing capabilities, the pilot got too slow with too great of a tailwind and was unable to get the nose up to flare for landing, so he landed a bit shorter than planned. No one was hurt in the event, but apparently "any landing you can walk away from is a good one" didn't keep him from being fired.
For way more information than you really care about re: this event:
