On election night there were a few news channels using some very interesting
augmented reality toys.
This video is a pseudo-holographic interview between CNN's Anderson Cooper and singer Will.i.am. Other less sophisticated uses were of NBC's Anne Curry walking around in a "room" of three dimensional graphs of election results and Campbell Brown looking at different angles of a large 3D display of congressional seats, etc.
The way it works is the "projected" person is at a remote location in a special tent surrounded by hi-def cameras creating a digital 3d image of the subject. The computers that control the picture for broadcast decide which angle of the 3d image should be visible and adjusts for display according, while the person in studio talks to an empty room.
This is the first time I've ever seen this technology in anything mainstream and I hope to see much more of it. It's just for show, but very cool nonetheless.
