dooglesays...*long
siftbotsays...This video has been flagged as being at least 10 minutes in length - declared long by doogle.
Fadesays...See, right there...that's delusion in action.
Mike Huckabee, you sir, are delusional. Somebody stick him in a straight jacket and drag him off the tele-box.
chilaxesays...I quite like that Huckabee was genuinely interested in dialogue, and he didn't seem to have the pride in ignorance that Palin seems to have sometimes.
Fadesays...Genuinely interested in dialogue? Rubbish. He's about as interested in dialogue as any fundie nutjob. They'll calmly listen to what you have to say and then blithely ignore it and continue to delude themselves.
There's a beautiful moment that starts about 8 minutes into this where Maher realises just how badly deluded Huckabee is and just has to laugh and say "wow"
brainsays...It's so weird when people defend religion by arguing the usefulness of it. How is that a coherent argument at all?
This is what I heard:
Maher: "There is no reason to believe Santa Claus exists."
Huckabee: "But he brings joy to many people's hearts, and causes people to strive to be on his good list!"
AKA, appealing to the consequence:

Schattdaddysays...I believe in Mary Jane. *cough*
13150says...@Fade: Actually, most fundie nutjobs won't calmly listen, or if they do, they'll then proceed to tell you that you're absolutely wrong. Huckabee at least appears to respect Maher's stance, even though his faith appears to be a rather blind one (as with the, "I think it's good for people to question," followed by, "Of course I don't question!").
If what we've seen here is your definition of a fundie nutjob, you have been living a blissfully sheltered life. He may be fundamentalist, but he's a rationalist compared to quite a few people I know personally.
Fadesays...Oh believe me I have plenty of experience with fundie nutjobs. Been through 3 usernames at freeconservatives.com and I'm an avid reader of fstdt.com
There are 2 types, the Loud and Proud, and the Serene and Gentle. Both equally as nutty.

honkeytonk73says...Complete and utter delusion.. quite entertaining to listen to Huckabee spew on and on about fairy tales.
brycewi19says...That actually sounded like an adult conversation between two people interested in understanding each other.
MaxWildersays...The only thing I ever hear from the "understanding" fundamentalist is: I'm interested in hearing what you believe so that I can ignore it and spout crap about how wonderful it is to give up logic to live in a dream world.
10040says...haalarious.
because jesus had to die on a cross and be resurrected so i will be willing to donate to my local food bank
zorsays...Huckabee is the real deal, which is rare among Republican evangelical conservatives these days. There have been a couple of instances in AR where he applied to state law legislation that irked 'conservative Christians' by caring for the poor and suffering. It was as if he had a brain and knew the right thing to do.
thehelixsays...While I generally identify with Bill Mahr's viewpoint, I can definitely see where Huckabee is coming from. My dad is very similar to him and we've had many talks about religion that have helped me understand where he's coming from. Even if I don't agree with him.
Granted there are a huge number of wacko nutjobs like Bill Mahr takes issue with, there are also a large number of people like Mike Huckabee and my dad who believe in this way. So I could totally see where Huckabee was coming from and what he was trying to say.
I thought they both made excellent points even if the result was basically a draw. You'll never get either of those guys to come to an agreement on religion. The mindset, reality, and way of thinking are too far apart to be compatible.
jwraysays..."My response is that when Creationists talk about God creating every individual species as a separate act, they always instance hummingbirds, or orchids, sunflowers and beautiful things. But I tend to think instead of a parasitic worm that is boring through the eye of a boy sitting on the bank of a river in West Africa, [a worm] that's going to make him blind. And [I ask them], 'Are you telling me that the God you believe in, who you also say is an all-merciful God, who cares for each one of us individually, are you saying that God created this worm that can live in no other way than in an innocent child's eyeball? Because that doesn't seem to me to coincide with a God who's full of mercy'"
If Huckabee he believes all species are created by God, I don't think he's connected the dots yet by instantiating that universal quantifier to parasites and pathogens. A benevolent god would not create a species that can only survive by torturing people.
thinker247says...Civility is the key to any good dialogue, and this exchange passes the test. However, even in civil discourse we can find fundamentalism that cannot leave aside deep-rooted convictions, however flawed they may be.
Nobody wins in this type of debate, but at least the tempers were subdued.
mickd1337says...I like this, as Huckabee said, civil discussion.
