Bill Maher: D.L. Hughley - "Nigger Upgrade"

DL Hughley makes a few observations about revisionist changes to US history and to Mark Twain.

it does make sense. I would rather be a white nigger then a white slave. I mean wtf, thats no "upgrade" exactly like he says. They should of left it the same as it was in the book, so much stupid bullshit over nothing. It holds a place in literary history, in essence they want to change their history. and that just is not right.

Changing the original language of Tom Sawyer is so fucking stupid on so many levels.
a) It's a historic book by one of America's most bad ass writers. You are tainting it's historical integrity and fucking with the writings of a genius and American icon.
b) Mark Twain knew what he was doing when he used that word. Mark Twain was clearly a progressive thinker on the subject of race. He knew it was an ugly word and used it to make a point.
c) We shouldn't be shielding our youth from our racist past. If we forget that lesson of history, we're more likely to repeat it.

(preaching to the choir, I know, just needed to get that out of my system)

Look it's a public domain book that has been changed by one publisher so that people who find said word too offensive can enjoy the work. It is not an across the board alteration to every copy of Huck Finn sold hence forth. Stupid? Probably. Worthy of attention? No.

The change was an attempt to circumvent the prior banning of the book by schools. I have far more of a problem with schools banning the book than a company trying to get around the ban.

The way some people talk about this (ie- this video) makes it seems like it was some guy's (or white people's) random idea because he didn't like a book containing "nigger". Hopefully any teacher using the altered version would have the foresight to use the alteration itself as part of the cultural and historical lesson.
