Apology to Americans.

swampgirlsays...

I watch this guy all the time on "Whose Line..." I like him. If he was doing this tongue-in-cheek, it was too convincing. Convincing enough to make me feel if he wants to join the 'hate America' club, he should first stop making his living here.

Kruposays...

LOL, swampgirl, it's definitely tongue-in-cheek - he's reporting for "This Hour has 22 Minutes", which is our "Daily Show".

Hence also the fake name of Anthony St. George.

first to Krupo... I retract what I say. I said before..I liked the guy. If it was tongue-in-cheek. Then I'm corrected.

As to you other two fellas,
Snake, criticism does not equal hate...that's right. Many folks in the US that enjoy speaking in forums like this with people all over the world get a steady diet of anti-American fare on a daily basis.. and we take it. You all are entitled to your opinions, some of which I agree.

But theo's comment I understand the least. Forgive me theo, but I was under the impression that the Sift community was comprised of people with varied opinions from all walks of life. That Dag and James have opened forum where all points of view are welcomed.
Members every day voice their likes and frustrations in response to the quality media that's presented here. And we all get to vote. If I'm wrong...then I will leave. Until then I will speak from my heart whatever it is I have to say.

If you have the opinion that only the ones that have the same opinions get to vote here, then maybe you are in the wrong forum.

With love....

Check out some of the Talking to Americans skits too - like the classic Poutine skit. They're horribly unfair b/c of how fast Rick Mercer speaks when asking his misleading questions, but that doesn't detract from the humour. http://www.videosift.com/story.php?id=8225

I'm guessing theo was just suggesting his political views rather than opinion on videosift.com voting; that was my interpretation anyway.

Oh, Canadians don't hate America. Otherwise, they'd have more than 10% of their population living farther than 100 miles from the southern border. And whenever someone in their entertainment industry hit it big (like the "I am Canadian!" Molson guy), they wouldn't all move to the US.

But what you have to realize is that this *isn't* a dig at Americans. It's a dig at Canadians themselves. The whole thing is a send-up of the peculiar sort of jingoism some (*some*) Canadians indulge in - that po-faced, quietly smug distaste for anything associated with America, with the implicit subtext that Canada is superior in every "important" way. The bit is done straight-facedly enough to lull in people sympathetic to the impulse - and then quietly sticks them with the last "apology".

Kruposays...

Even with the lumber issue, although he makes some very cogent points in favour of our lumber industry, he also points out (indirectly) that our CRTC does impose quite a bit of cultural protectionism which does, technically, impede strict interpretations of free trade. So everyone's impeding someone somewhere...

CRTC, explained: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CRTC

"So everyone's impeding someone somewhere..."

Oh, agreed. Really, with all the remaining restrictions on trade between the US, Mexico, and Canada, it makes you wonder why we bothered calling NAFTA a free trade agreement.

Speaking for the American people, I accept Canada's apology, for I too am a member of the "Love/Hate America Club".

I love the beauty of America's rivers, national parks, mountains, coastlines and forests, but hate that they are being polluted, sold to private for-profit mega-energy companies, and were unjustly taken from the native peoples. I love that Americans pride themselves on being the good guys, fighting the good fight and knowing how to choose right from wrong, but hate the fact that America's governmental agencies and political leaders – not to mention military industries - have historically and continuously brought death and misery to multitudes of innocent (I repeat: innocent) people around the world. I could of course go on and on describing the juxtaposition of great American accomplishments compared with the dark and unsavory sides of this great nation’s demonstrated abilities, but perhaps the point is made…..It’s OK to hate the bad things about America….. and even better yet to use that hatred as inspiration to actively work for a better America….a future America that uses its ample resources to genuinely and effectively foster peace, health, and tolerance both within it’s own borders as well as amongst its global neighbors.

1. No, it's definitely a dig at Americans - the apologetic tone is sarcastic. Criticism of the government isn't unpatriotic, it's demanding that government lives up to its ideals.
2. swampgirl, anyone who has to use invectives like "the Hate America Club" when referring to people on the other side of the political aisle are not showing the intelligence and depth of character which should accompany anyone who debates seriously about politics. Hence the not-serious crack about being unfit to vote.
It's a half-step away from the "Commie" and "hippie" labels that conservatives have used for decades to suggest the left is not as patriotic as the right. No one "hated America" during McCarthyism or the Civil Rights Era, and we don't now. Pardon my French, but I'm sick and fucking tired of the right's elite tone on things like patriotism and morals, when it's pretty clear after 6 years of Republican domination who cares more about the people of this country and the world, and who acts responsibly and morally. It ain't the Republican Party.
End rant.

swampgirlsays...

Well damn, theo and Krupo...which is it, joke or thinly veiled criticism? LOL

I'm not objective to say whether I have intelligence or depth of character...(no flame please) but I can say that serious debate about politics isn't my taste, I'll try not to insult your superior sensibilities.
But how narrow is it that you labeled me as "republican" merely because I was on the other side of the fence with you on this video.

I don't know where you're from theo, but from what you've said you sound like a liberal American, because you took offense to my "hate America club" comment.
The club name was a little tongue in cheek, but there is some truth in my sentiment. American's are criticized and resented for many reasons...most of which is the Iraq war right now.
You make it sound like I accused American's of hating themselves. Did I?

I say screw the video and let's kiss and make up.

"1. No, it's definitely a dig at Americans - the apologetic tone is sarcastic. Criticism of the government isn't unpatriotic, it's demanding that government lives up to its ideals."

Er, you did watch the whole thing, right? Also, try to keep in mind that a Canadian's criticism of any aspect of America is, by definition, neither patriotic nor unpatriotic.
