Apocalyptic tunnel explosion in Syria

this is insane

A massive underground bomb destroyed a important Syrian government building yesterday. The bomb was planted underneath the building by using a tunnel. The FSA have used similar tactics before to destroy other government buildings.

This was a common tactic in the first world war, and where the name 'land mine' comes from. Kinda surprised anyone would do it in this situation. I guess it worked, though.

It's really depressing how things are going down in Syria. There can be no good ending to this story--at least, not for a long, long time.

(Reuters) - About 30 Syrian government fighters were killed when rebels set off a bomb in a tunnel beneath a checkpoint in a northwestern province, activists said on Tuesday.

Videos and images posted by opposition supporters online showed a massive plume of smoke and earth shooting into the air near a small town as men shouted "Allahu akbar" (God is greatest).

Rebels fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad regularly carry out guerrilla attacks against his forces, but the size of the blast, which occurred on Monday, was unusual.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group, said the blast took place outside the town of Ma'arat al-Nu'man in the northwestern Idlib province.

At least two officers were among those killed when insurgents from the Islamic Front and the Shields of the Revolution Council set off tons of explosives in a tunnel running from the road to the checkpoint, the group said.

Without knowing the context, and judging by the video alone, my instant mental picture was (and I'm not joking or making this up for any political reasons), envisioning my Mother and Sister in those buildings. That was literally my mental projection as I watched it, completely ignorant of the eventual destruction.

I honestly can't say why. Context plays a massive role when receiving/experiencing such information. It was probably that it was a typical-looking city area prior to the detonation.

Regardless, this video made my heart sink to the bottom of my soul. I would say I side with the initial rebel agenda (maybe not today, seeing so many reports of exploitation by outside groups). But, a concept I struggle with every day is the violence we act upon ourselves.
