daphnesays...Copper pennies lose their shine pretty quickly. Depending on the age and use of the coin, they range all the way to almost black.

davideosays...The pennies could have also been slightly treated. Copper is very easily tarnished by various chemicals. Doen't hamper the overall intention though.
