cats are scientifically described as 'crepuscular', a term meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk (as oppossed to strickly nocturnal, which is commonly assumed). So, maybe don't bust his chops so much; its his nature!
(i do research with lab rats, so thats how I know this rather exotic term)
