Dan Savage on What to Expect From a Gay Roommate
In female to male gender transition, transgendered people often have voice changes with testosterone injections if they are younger. Their voice will drop, not unlike during puberty for men, although they may also choose to attend voice therapy to further 'pass' as a man.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_therapy_(transgender)
Anyhow, the sound of what is 'feminine' and 'masculine' are to a degree hormonal. It can be hormones delivered artificially, hormones exposed to during development that change the different aspects of the brain, a lot of the details are not well understood.
Theres a lot more to say, but I might be rambling. Jump on the googles if you're interested, maybe stumble on the Kinsey Institutes sex and gender research.
anyone know if what savage says is true or is he just speculating? I always assumed it was a sociological thing and a manifestation of counterculture and that it would eventually go away as gays are accepted and treated like everyone else
Football (soccer) in a nutshell
Australian rules football is the opposite, where people who are clearly injured pretend to not be so they can keep playing.

The Best Conversation In Human History
Oh, its - "...You can stick it up your own, Asshole!".
And not - "... You can stick it up your own asshole!".
Reminds me of Will Ferrell as Harry Caray trying out for a role (Best of Will Ferrell on SNL), saying 'I hate ya Sweet Jesus!' vs. 'I hate ya! Sweet Jesus!'

Too bad it doesn't cause infertility. Then we could improve the species -and- get our entertainment at the same time.
Marilyn Manson Interpreted in Sign Language
randomly watched this; pretty fun! The lyrics and some of the vibe of this song reminds me of the (IMO) much better song 'New Noise' by Refused (http://youtu.be/K8MkVIe9xGc).
Man Prays For His Wife's Recovery. Crucifix Takes Payment
I see the irony, but I don't get why some people are upset by the guy.
I see a man who felt powerless to help his wife, and so did the only things he could... remaining strong for the family and spending time each day thinking positive thoughts (a.k.a. praying for help).
The guy now has some pretty bad hospital bills due to an accident that may have been avoidable, and took advice that he should file an insurance claim. The insurance company challenged the claim, so he again took advice that a lawsuit was worth filing to help him and his family (and probably avoid bankruptcy... this is the USA after all).
10 Accidental Inventions
My favorite of the list is Greatbatch, and his story really gets to the value of inspiration and curiousity as an inventor. He was just making a device to record heart beats, and put in an incorrect resistor for his circuit, resulting in a oscillating blip in his recordings. Instead of going 'fuck! I made the goddamn thing wrong! So I threw it on the grooooound!' No he said, 'Woah, thats neat, I have sort-of a built-in time guage that is very regular in my recordings, and can see how irregular the heart beat is ... wait a minute...', and then proceeded to work on the completely crazy idea of an implantable, miniature device to electrically stimulating the heart to keep it beating evenly as people just walked around.
I'd argue that its basically impossible to accidentally invent something. You have to be bright enough to recognize something interesting, and curious enough to follow it off in the direction it leads.
Disabled Mans Navajo Blanket Worth A Small Fortune
From poor, humble serf
Dependent on government
Up through tax brackets
Beautifully done, QM. May your artistic residency on these boards continue for many years!

According to liberal doctrine, this man just went from a humble serf, dependent on government, to an evil rich White guy who should be taxed at 90%.

Wallace Dresses Down Gillespie Over Romney's 20% Tax Cut
A relative of mine owns a small business, and recognizes that an increase in purchasing power in the bottom 90% of Americans would drive more purchasing in the US, and more buying would drive more investment by him in terms of labor and non-liquid assets in his business. However a bit of cognitive dissonance leads him to "feel" that increasing taxes on large corporations and the very wealthy to lock in lower taxes on the middle class is not 'leveling the playing field', and "feels wrong".
Basically he optimistically feels that he may one day be in the top 1% of earners, and this weird selfishness that he may one day be incredibly wealthy and thus affected by a higher tax burden is leading him to vote against his own goddamn interest. This, and he "feels" that once taxes have been raised on the wealthy, there will be blood in the water and it will eventually slide down to those making $~100k. Its hard to argue with feelings about the future.

Thank you QM for that thoughtful reply.
It just seems that the imbalance right now is in demand, not the availability of capitol to invest.
