Slam Poetry - 'Friend Zone' - Loser To Hero in 3 Minutes

Procrastinatron says...

Ugh. He segues from the tired old friend-zone cliché to the friend-zone somehow being a part of the feminist idea of rape culture. He then goes on to assume de facto blame for a crime (i.e., he looks in the mirror and sees a monster) that neither happened nor would've had anything to do with him in the first place even if it had happened.

All because he was a guy who made the horrible mistake of wanting to have sex with girls.

I agree that sex shouldn't be "owed," but... having known plenty of guys like this, they're just looking for more ways to game the system. They snivel and they prostrate themselves and they only ever say the things they imagine women would like them to say and they never say anything that they imagine a woman wouldn't want them to say, and they do all this because they want women to throw them a bone. They imagine that if they do everything right, if they follow every rule in the book and never ask any questions and never take issue with anything the women around them say, they will finally become worthy of sex.

What inevitably happens is that only the most insecure (and usually crazy, too) of their female friends will bother with the guy while the rest of them find guys who don't spend their time crawling at their feet and calling themselves evil disgusting rape culture-supporting perverts just because they think it's what they're supposed to do.

There's nothing heroic about what this guy said. If anything, it's tragic that he should feel that he almost raped a girl when all he did was feel betrayed because she wouldn't sleep with him, but would sleep with her next boyfriend. As if he's somehow sick and evil just because he has emotions.

'Enders Game' Writer's Ridiculous Racist Rant Against Obama

Procrastinatron says...

Yes, and the people who didn't think Bush would step down peacefully were insane as well. I can't imagine that having been a very mainstream idea to have when Bush was the president, so I can't see why it is suddenly "horribly unfair" for people to react when Card lets his insanity shine through.

And even in the quote you posted, Card described his prediction as being "plausible." To ignore that fact is also to lie, albeit by omission.

bcglorf said:

Here is Card's preface before any of the Quotes TYT laid out:
"So as a science fiction writer and a student of history, allow me to spin a plausible scenario about how, like Augustus Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, Adolph Hitler, and Vladimir Putin, Barack Obama could become lifetime dictator without any serious internal opposition."

It is absolutely clear that he does NOT state this is a prediction of the future he expects. Meanwhile Cenk painstakingly sets up that the quotes are Card's rallying cry against what he expects to happen in the next few years. That's lying.

Card's statements prior to that were nothing any more severe than what all manner of people decried Bush and Cheney for and worse. Plenty of people talked at length about 'what if' Bush doesn't step down, or Cheney doesn't step down. I think it horrifically unfair to now leap down Card's throat for the same.

I'm not defending TYT's actions here, and I don't exactly take TYT seriously. Like Chingalera said, they're tabloidistic and unprofessional.

But again, to claim that the latter part of the article was a "purely fictional account" simplifies it excessively.

What Card did in the article was essentially the same as racists tend to do when they say, "I'm not a racist, but..."

Card was essentially saying, "I'm not saying that Obama is equivalent to Stalin, but Obama is equivalent to Stalin."

Now, Card says that the events described in his thought experiment were "unlikely," but they still erred on the side of insanity, and when he puts that in an article he's going to have to expect opposition. You can't just say whatever you want and then expect it to go unopposed simply because you loosely framed it as a "silly thought experiment" beforehand.

bcglorf said:

But every single quote that TYT ran there was from the AFTER part of the article where Card has clearly stated this is the fictional account of what the future under Obama would be like in the event that he was a Stalin or Hitler. Prior to that Card just discussed his own opinion, with strong right leanings, but hardly any worse than is daily said against Bush by Cenk.

Bold face lying about what Card said is not made OK because he happens to be a republican that believes the Iraq war was justifiable and that the media outside of Fox has given Obama a free ride.

Skater punched by kid's mom

Procrastinatron says...

Yeah, I love the way she sort of just steps over her ailing kid so she can hit the guy. I would probably have focused on making sure the kid was all right.

the skater was in the middle of a flip trick when he ran into the kid. its not exactly something you do with your eyes closed. arguably unavoidable from his standpoint.

i wanna know why she was in the next county when it happened and then took her sweet ass time getting there, and then utterly disregards her child so she could hit that skater cuz it was the kids birthday (isnt that what she said?)

Oh yes it most definitely IS.

And do you know why? BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS BETTER THAN DANISH.

Seriously. Scorpions from outer space using your colon as an incubator for their young? BETTER THAN DANISH.

Evil Nazis climbing up from hell, taking over the world, and making everybody learn German and wear stupid little brown shorts? BETTER THAN DANISH.

'CUZ EVERYTHING IS BETTER THAN DANISH.

Skater punched by kid's mom

I'm with neither of them, because shit happens, but... seriously, that area looked wide open and the kid came straight at him. Couldn't either the skater or the guy with camera have, y'know, just looked in the direction they were moving at some point? If you're riding your skateboard in a public space and you've got your eyes locked on your feet because you totes want to stick that ollie (or whatever the fuck us crazy kids are calling it these days), accidents like this one are just waiting to happen.

@L0cky @bcglorf

It's disappointing that TYT didn't mention the context, but it's also facetious to claim that the article was purely a thought experiment.

Yes, he does say the following in the beginning of the article: "No, no, it's just a silly thought experiment! I'm not serious about this! Nobody can predict the future! It's just a game. The game of Unlikely Events."

...But the rest of the article is spent stating opinions and things that are just outright wrong as if they are completely factual and true.

There're no "let's just consider for a moment that..." in the article, nor are there any what-ifs. He simply goes from claiming that Iran will nuke Israel if the US doesn't step in, to claiming that Obama is, effectively, a dictator.

And all of this craziness takes part during the set-up for his "thought experiment." This is the context that Orson Scott Card himself provides us with.

It was very low for TYT to skip over the fact that this is, in part, a thought experiment. However, it is also false to claim that it was just a thought experiment, and nothing more.

Mommy, Where Does Our Food Come From?

Interesting find.

And just like Koyaanisqatsi, all that is really needed is to put the unadulterated shots on display. There's no need for a narrator to tell you how you should feel about it.

artician said:

Amazing. That was so artful and poignant. The last two shots were just... fuck humans. Haha.

EDIT: Just watched the full film. It's very reminiscent of the "Quatsi" films. After some digging, it turns out Ron Fricke (the creator of Samsara) was the original cinematographer for those as well.
I really love films like this, and this is probably one of the best yet. Amazing look at at human existence.
