Ark - CGI animated short film

kronosposeidon says...

Just because you're tired of this style of humanoid, jmd (and that's fine), doesn't mean that the artist sucks at making humanoids. It might have been his choice from the get go. It would be like saying Picasso chose his style because he sucked at painting things realistically.

As far as the story goes, here is how I view it: The mysterious disease is actually just the aging process, and one of the common side effects of aging is senile dementia, which can manifest itself in many ways, including living in a fantasy world. Even in his dementia he realizes that something is wrong with himself, and decides to end it all.

That's how I took it. I thought it was a good, dark short story.

I get tired of this style of humanoids. I've seen many works and while some work, there is always a subset like this which reveal themselves as badly looking humanoids because the artist sucks at making humanoids.

Also you can tell this was pretty much done by one or more cg artist, and no writers amongst them. It leads you with a text intro into a futuristic plot, at which point it follows one man. Every second the movie plays along, more and more questions get asked. At the end, the storyline was a fake.. and this guys just a wacked out old man in hospital called ark. This is where the big problem arises. The story at the very end is abruptly called false and the new storyline which last like 30 seconds, has 2 connections with the old story line, the name of the hospital and the shape of the hospital. Thats it... so why do we care? What do we walk away from this movie with? I'll tell you what... a ton of questions from the main storyline that never get answered and zero questions from the ending.

If I really liked tormenting myself like this I would make a habit of watching every tv show to the 18 minute mark and then quickly switch over to the home shopping network.

"Uncanny Valley" is a consensus theory but not scientifically proven.

Except for the scientific papers that measure and confirm it, you mean?

For instance, http://www.bartneck.de/publications/2007/uncannyCliff/index.html

There's other publications I could point to:
# Hanson, D. (2006). Exploring the Aesthetic Range for Humanoid Robots. Proceedings of the CogSci Workshop Towards social Mechanisms of android science, Stresa.

# MacDorman, K. F. (2006). Subjective ratings of robot video clips for human likeness, familiarity, and eeriness: An exploration of the uncanny valley. Proceedings of the ICCS/CogSci-2006 Long Symposium: Toward Social Mechanisms of Android Science, Vancouver.

The original paper is "Mori, M. (1970). The Uncanny Valley. Energy, 7, 33-35." by the way, but it doesn't include empirical studies.

'Perfect Woman' robot: They plan on marketing to single men

Oh come on... stop believing this crud, she is faker than a fake thing inside a fake other thing that is also quite fake.

It is a woman pretending to be a robot.

Why?
* Look at/in her mouth when she talks, that's a real mouth working right there
* Her movements are what a bad actress would think a robot would move like but not how humanoid robots actually move (like, robots have no reason to have stupidly slow blinks anymore, they can do that perfectly quickly now)
* The 'inventor' is doing his bit really badly as well, he's no inventor of a robot.
* Also, isn't it interesting that they don't actually SHOW anything of the 'expo' they are obviously supposed to be in due to the sound they've added...
* And yeah, they really have a robot that cooks dinner and converses... yeeeeeah.
* Oh, and they show themselves on a google map on their contact page, but that address don't exist on no google map page.

But don't worry pprt, I'm sure they're not trying to actually get any money out of this other than a marketing gimick thing, they won't be actually trying to raise money for robot purchases/builds. In fact it may purely be a social experiment to see how many people they can dupe, or some kind of art project. I don't mind these kinds of things, they're quite fun, what I DO mind is how many people just accept them as true, no critical eye whatsoever... it's maddening.

Let me put it in here that I think we'll find it's by a marketing company called 'Rocket Science'

D&D first level magic spells generally suck

Sleep is actually an incredibly horrible first level spell due to its ridiculously low saving throw to negate.
Magic Missile is un-saveable damage that always hits and increases in damage as your caster level increases, therefore the rating of B- is somewhat low considering how consistently good it is.
Charm Person has the same saving throw problem as Sleep, in addition to only working on humanoid creatures. Animals/Beasts/Monsters - often far more dangerous than any humanoid - are completely unaffected.

i did not see that coming.

I think dupes would be a lot easier to see if people labeled their submissions properly. i.e. a couple o months back I submitted Dio's song Holy Diver. There was an existing one but it didn't have Holy Diver in the tags or title. So when it was pointed out by a member who was pretty irate with me that it was a dupe. I had no way of knowing because a search for it and the possible duplicates didn't bring it up at all.

The moral of the story: give your video proper tags. Not only that but it would clear up a ton of videos in the dead pool that say stuff like "Holy Crap!" and "Unspecified humanoid in Unspecified State does Unspecified activity."

Many seem to reject evolution on the notion of lack of a missing human "link" but fail to see that it is a moot point. Just as it would be if we were discussing any other type of non-humanoid animal and it's possibly missing transition(it being in transition itself). The process of evolution does not discriminate in who suffers it's effects; it is all-inclusive. What makes us so special?

Well, since he was able to mention 3 separate theories

It was the hosts who pointed this out. True, he may have alluded to them but didn't seem to know the difference, having morphed them all into one.

Go figure-The Japanese are some of the healthiest humanoids on the planet, their food production still pretty much in the same hands it's been in for centuries.....they eat lotsa fish, seaweed, and fresh veggies.....

In the U.S., we don't grow our own food anymore....big agri-biz (evil white people) grows it, corporate manufacturing packages it, and Madison avenue sells it, and the pharmaceutical companies are there to sell us their wares, when the food the evil ones grow, gives us pain and disease....Aren't you glad you live in such a world??? Paradise and Purgatory, at the same time.....

I grieve daily that I am not in a place and time at present, that I do not have control of my own food sources and supplies-I would grow most of my food myself, raise my own chickens, goats, rabbits, etc.

The only thing I want to have to buy is grain and the omega oils I can't get from not living near the coast.

The United States is full of the most diseased people on the planet, but this could be corrected in a single generation-makes a person wanna make radical changes-("calm down choggie, you can't change it, simply work within it.")
