2057: Cities, The World & Body (Discovery drama-docs)

firefly says...

For those who like to go right to the highlights,
After a three-minute intro, here’s a rough breakdown:
Minute 4: 3D technologies, with traditional screens and “fogscreens”
Minute 8: networked cars/smart houses. This includes a segment of the DARPA Grand Challenge: completely autonomous vehicles navigating a desert obstacle course.
Minute 18: humanoid robots, including a background on Honda’s ASIMO
Minute 24: future in cyber-security (yep, hackers still exist!)
Minute 31: next generation surveillance and biometric systems, including not only photographing citizens, but identifying as well.
Minute 38: archival recovery; holographic crystals with microscopic images.

Pitfall Atari Commercial with Jack Black

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Yes, I remember that too. I was amazed because I thought the graphics looked as good as an Atari 400 game. Eric Mussen disagreed.

I think that Berzerk was present at the same time, which was also a pretty decent translation onto the 2600. Of course they couldn't get the "Destroy the Humanoid" sound on a VCS.

Ergo Proxy

Farhad2000 says...

Ergo Proxy is a science fiction suspense anime television series directed by Shukou Murase, with screenplay by Dai Sato et al. This is the opening that starts off the show from episode 3, the song is "Kiri" by Monoral. Ergo Proxy features a combination of 2D digital cell animation, 3D computer modeling and digital special effects. The series has some cyber punk elements.

The story initially takes place in a futuristic dome city called Romdo, built to protect its citizens after global environmental apocalypse. In this utopia, humans and androids (AutoRevs) coexist with each other peacefully under a total management system. A series of murders committed by berserk robots infected with the Cogito Virus are starting to jeopardize the delicate balance of the social order. Behind the scenes, the government is conducting secret experiments on a mysterious humanoid lifeform called Proxy, which is believed to hold the key to the survival of mankind.

In an interview, Dai Sato describes his latest project.

"It is set in the future. A group of robots become infected with something called the Cogito virus, and become aware of their own existence. So these robots, which had been tools of humans, decide to go on an adventure to search for themselves. They have to decide whether the virus that infected them created their identity, or whether they gained their identity through their travels. This question is meant to represent our own debate over whether we become who we are because of our environment, or because of things that are inherent in us. The robots are all named after philosophers: Derrida and Lacan and Husserl."

It's not licensed yet so you're allowed to watch it online on various streaming websites. You can catch the first episode on Youtube. Be warned it will be pulled eventually.

I found this to be a very cool and cerebral anime series.

Trigun (awesome anime)

Farhad2000 says...

Trigun is a sci-fi manga series with a steampunk Wild West theme created by Yasuhiro Nightow in 1995, and adapted into a 26 episode anime series in 1998 by Madhouse. It is the story of Vash the Stampede, a.k.a. The Humanoid Typhoon, and the two Bernardelli Insurance Society employees, Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson, who were ordered to follow him and minimize the damage that seems to follow Vash everywhere he goes.

Trigun was created by the animation studio Madhouse in 1998 and directed by Satoshi Nishimura. The October 2005 issue of Neo magazine (A UK Anime magazine) includes an interview with Studio Madhouse's founder, Masao Maruyama. In it he says the studio is working on a Trigun Movie that should be released in a "couple of years". The November issue of Anime Insider also confirms this news.

Still one of my favorite anime series.

Falling and Flying Reptiles (Awesome Footage)

Honda ASIMO Falls Down Stairs

arrendek says...

Standard robot issue... if you aren't in a stable state at all times (aka on wheels, at least three feet on ground, etc) then you'd better not lose power or have a software failure or lose a motor, or else this is what happens.

These humanoid robots are neat but aren't practical from a "we're researching robotics" kind of way. That said, I'm glad Honda has been making some progress in the humanoid area since our universities/government agencies sure haven't, and at some point a humanoid robot could be useful.

Also: Hi, long time fan, new registeree.

Final Flight Of The Osiris (Animatrix) Incredible Graphics!

Raytrace says...

No problem. I found it quite interesting. The first time I watched Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, I felt that there was just something wrong with the whole movie though I could never quite put my finger on it. Then I read about the uncanny valley in one of its movie reviews and everything made sense. It's something that will plague all humanoid 3d characters for a long long time. Just sharing the knowledge.

Trigun - Orignal Opening Theme (1:29)

Wepwawet says...

This is the original opening of the anime "Trigun" with an absolutely killer theme. AFAIK, this opening was never shown on Cartoon Network's broadcast of the show.

The theme is "H.T." (Humanoid Typhoon) by Tsuneo Imahori.

Japanese Crawling Robot

dotdude says...

I found this on iFilm. When I did a web search, I found it also on Google Video. You can see more than this clip for 99 cents. I didn't realize it was really a teaser to get you to pay more.

The description reads:

Japanese performance artist Momoyo Torimitsu takes her robot for a crawl in downtown Sydney, Australia. Crowds watch the bizarre sight of the life-like Japanese businessman in suit and tie slowly crawling on all fours along the pavement. The robot is a symbol of the Japan's rigid Salaryman culture.
