Dystopian Fiction: How Reading Transforms Your Mind

cloudballoon says...

I recommend to all my friends to watch Vice.

Talk shows, I subscribed to Oliver, Myers, Noah & Colbert. Quite happy Colbert didn't lose his chop when he moved to CBS. I hardly ever LOL when Letterman hosted, just a few chuckles perhaps, so TLS is a vast improvement when Colbert took over.

TL;DW! I jest, I jest! I remember I used to read metric (yes, METRIC) tons of books during my formative years. Novels, fiction, non-fiction, comics... I read Times & Maclean's (Canadian equivalent of Times) magazines front-to-back... like over 90% of all articles every week. But high-speed internet & smartphone happened then I don't read prints very much anymore. Still read/watch news too much though, but it's now more depressing than educational with the stuff I read online. The journalistic standard is way down.
Much harder to find really enlightening long-form reporting these days.

The Game that is pissing off the Alt Right

shagen454 says...

Yeah, the video did a horrible job at actually displaying angry alt-righters. But, nevertheless, Wolfenstein 2 is a good game worth killing some Nazis for. It was also interesting to see who of the characters in the game are in real life. The title probably came from Vice wanting the Alt-Right to look into the game that shows their comrades being virtually blown to bits in high resolution.

eric3579 said:

I came and wanted to see the Alt RIght being pissed off (because that's the title) and got nothing. I mean, unless the 3 twitter messages, from random nobody's, which was on screen for three seconds was all the outrage. Video seems more National Enquirer then Vice "news". We all hate Nazis is hardly news. More like a circle jerk imo. Anyway, call me disappointed

Shannon Sharpe on Trump, NFL and Protest

Mordhaus says...

The USA doesn't really have a middle ground for patriotism (except for the super rich, I mean THE one percenters).

You either grew up or learned to be fairly anti-patriotic, or vice versa super-patriotic.

This dichotomy has divided us since almost the beginning of the nation. I don't see it ever being solved as long as we remain one.

That said, there are smart people and idiots on both sides. I consider myself to be very patriotic to the nation itself, but I realize that there are plenty of things we must improve at. Sadly, there is always going to be the contingent that either thinks we can never improve or that thinks there is no need for it. Trying to explain logic to either of them is nigh futile.

As far as the NFL, I suspect the next move Trump will make is to push for the removal of their anti-trust exemption.

This is what a coward looks like

bcglorf says...

Same guy.

Guy also mentions the Keene Police force... The Free Keene Squad was him... yeah.

https://youtu.be/-vQ5h8iWa0Q

But everybody finding this funny, or revelling in the karma isn't watching the same video I am. If you've watched him in the Vice segment, this video is one of the most disturbing things you can watch. These aren't the tears of a defeated man. This looks to me like the a guy overcome with emotion, not just sadness or fear. I can easily imagine this same gut wrenched display as an apology to the guy(s) he just shot at a future protest and distraught at how he was forced to do it and doesn't like it but will do it again if he has to.

I'm sure he'll claim he's not crying, but rather he was just pepper sprayed by communists.

Liberal Redneck - Virginia is for Lovers, not Nazis

Asmo says...

While I have no interest in defending right wingers, the old adage of "defending scoundrels" applies...

You must be fucking kidding Newt... Seriously, have you had your head up your ass over the past year with the various riots and attacks headed up by antifa? The same people that classify anyone who doesn't submit to their orthodoxy as nazi's, then say it's fine to physically assault said nazi's for talking, because talking is literally as dangerous as physical violence? You remember the Battle of Berkley, bikelock guy, moldylocks and her scalp claims/sap gloves/M80's in glass bottles?

But yeah, they're as pure as the driven snow right?!?!? /eyeroll

The communists and the nazi's are only separated by the thinnest of differences, and both prefer to resolve issues with violence rather than conversation. Favouring one over the other is like saying Hitler was better than Stalin (or vice versa). But antifa and other identitarian groups do have to wear responsibility for unifying white nationalists and giving them license. They've spent so long vilifying whiteness that the only surprise here for me is that this sort of thing hasn't happened sooner.

But yeah, way to stand with the Communists Newt. Nice job.

KKK, alt-right, nazi party, white nationalists, and generic right wing racists, all under the banner 'Unite the right' (meaning right wing, not the correct). That's not one radical group it's a conglomeration of many, all of which are firmly on your 'team', and the counter protesters were not so organized and were mostly non-affiliated locals protesting a hate march/rally in their town.

The right wingers came armed, in riot gear, with shields, clubs, and mace. The anti protesters had cardboard and sticks they picked up on site when confronted, and mace. The right marched, without permits, all weekend. (the one event they had a permit for was canceled due to repeated violence in each of those unsanctioned marches) The right wingers were 90%+ non residents that came to start a fight, the anti-protesters were, from what I've seen, nearly 100% locals.
The right wingers committed actual murder and uncountable attempted murders and assaults. I didn't hear of or see a single right winger being killed or even hospitalized.

With the right as one of those extremist groups, I expect violence, no matter the circumstances and I'm rarely disappointed.

But yeah...like your president, feel free to continue deflect blame from your team and keep trying to pretend it's all the "other's" fault and they are responsible for your team's hate crimes and racism. That's working so well for him...and you....winning.

*Facepalm*

Way to stand with the Nazis, Bob. Nice job.

PS: It's ANTIFA, not ANFTA. It's short for ANTIFACIST. Know your enemy.

11 year old uses saved birthday money for Dad's Xmas Present

lucky760 says...

Spiritual down-vote from me. Hadn't seen this video, but someone just shared it on Facebook and this was my reply (I think inline with @JustSaying's feelings):

Good kid, but their parenting values are not something I can agree with. He ostensibly taught the boy "My fun is so important to me that you should disregard your own birthday and anything else you need or want or that your family needs or even saving your money, and instead buy me a PS4 so I can play video games." A child should never be in a position where he feels any responsibility to be the provider of his father's several-hundred-dollar play things.

Yes, it was nice of the boy; I just feel bad for him. He's supposed to be the one being treated like a child by his father, the provider, not vice versa.

But... to each his own.

I came searching for a different, but related video where the parents did surprise their son with an XBOX (I think), but instead of being excited, the boy was concerned that his parents spent money on it that they couldn't afford to lose.

Tabs v(ersu)s Spaces from Silicon Valley S3E6

Buttle says...

It does have to do with writing code.

I have to deal with a source code repository that's full of tabs at work every day. Indentation for code may be composed of spaces and tabs, or spaces only. If tabs are present, then everyone working with the code has to use the same tab width setting, otherwise the indentation will be fubar.

If two people save edits using a different tab width setting, then there really is no way of fixing it up beyond auto-indenting it all and saving with a consistent tab setting.

The advantage of tabs is saving a few bytes on file size, which is completely undetectable in today's world of html email and xml everything.

The film, however, makes no sense, because the only way you can find out about a fundamental disagreement on spaces v tabs is by opening someone else's file in your editor, and finding the indentation all messed up. It's not something you can tell by looking over a shoulder.

The difference between emacs and vi, by the way, is that emacs has several good vi emulations, but it would be laughable to think of an emacs emulation in vi.

Emacs used to seem a completely outsized pig of a program, but in our modern times it's actually tiny. Still, you would expect a vi-champion to want tabs instead of spaces, not vice versa.

Not a lot of understanding displayed here, I'm afraid.

eric3579 said:

Don't think i've ever used a tab outside filling in a form or playing video games. Does the tab thing have more to do with writing code?

Trump Mingle Dating App

newtboy says...

I'm often confused by dating apps that pair people that are as close to carbon copies as possible. My wife and I are a great pair because we are so different that her strengths cover my weaknesses and vice versa. I can't imagine it working if we both had the same issues or all the same views and so never made the other think and evolve.
