Michael Jackson: Smooth Criminal.

Michael Jackson is Dead, Joins Farrah Fawcett (News Talk Post)

videosiftbannedme says...

Do you remember the time you first heard Michael Jackson? He was bad! He could jam, scream; he'd rock with you all night. Regardless of whether you were black or white, his music was never off the wall. He knew music like no other, like he learned it as easy as learning his ABC's. He was both a smooth criminal, and a thriller to his fans. He will be missed.

RIP

I very much liked "Lady in the water". I thought it worked wonderfully well as a fairy tale set in modern-day America. However, as a thriller it didn't work at all, which is probably why most people disliked it so much.
It's all about the expectations, and looking at this trailer it seems to me like the director isn't trying to live up to the presumptions of what a live action rendition of a cartoon should be. So the people who'll enjoy it will probably not be the rabid fans or the highly vocal and critical internet population, but rather the silent, casual viewer without prior knowledge of the story or bias against the director.

There was by the end of WWII, in the Manhattan project in particular that I know about. But those are scientists, not actors. Can you change peoples minds, their ideals with movies? Yes, I think you can. Is the power afforded media, the way we take it in the vein, something to be concerned about? I think so. Was the paranoia justified? That's the thing about paranoia, it's self-justifying.

I can actually feel pretty nostalgic about what I remember of the end of the cold war. I'll take cold-war spy thrillers over 24 any day.

What is the best sci-fi/fantasy movie series? (User Poll by Throbbin)

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

I wish I could say The Matrix series, because I had my mind blown by the first Matrix. It was one of the most perfect surprise movie moments - I had some time to kill so I decided to check it out - I knew nothing about it. I thought it was going to be just a typical conspiracy thriller or something. So when he started to turn to liquid metal and woke up in the pod - I was cheering internally.

But the rest in the series were shit. So I vote Star Wars.

Strange. Late last year I was reading Richard K Morgans "Thirteen", a near-future scifi thriller. Part of the background was that the US of today split up into the eastern federation, the pacific rim and "Jesusland" as it was colloquially known. While the other two parts of the country were doing ok-ish, Jesusland was fenced off at the border (to keep the faithful safe(ly) inside), stirring up trouble for everyone else and drifting into third-world-nation status. Oh and being slowly run over by radioactive mutant ants. But that's happening already.

At times I really wonder how fast fact catches up with fiction.

I liked it quite a bit. I was glad to see Nicholas Cage in a movie I find good again. Of those two of his movies, I would prefer Dark City, but probably just because of the visual world building to the straight modern-day sci fi thriller.

What Are Your Top 5 Books? (Books Talk Post)

  • The Atrocity Archives, Charles Stross. Geeky spoof of mysterious secret services. And how can you say no to "Computational Daemonology"?
  • Zodiac, Neal Stephenson, Eco-Thriller. I can identify chlorachne now.
  • The Science of Discworld, Terry Pratchett et al. An introduction to the (then) current state of diverse serious sciences (non-fiction) interspersed with (fictinal) discworld interludes. I like it more for the serious sciency stuff than the discworld interludes. Did you know that our solar system is going to lose a planet? And it might be earth!
  • Dirk Gentlys Holistic Detective Agency, Douglas Adams. And you thought THHG was good.
  • Revelation Space series, Alastair Reynolds. Hard Sci-Fi space opera.

  • The WORST Thriller dance of all time

    Worst Decade Ever! poor kid.

Ya know, I'm getting really sick of comments like this. Just because you didn't like the 80's does not make it the worst decade ever. What is everyone's problem with the 80's anyway? As far as I'm concerned the 00's are the worst decade ever so far.
