Big Think: John Cleese on Being Offended

vil says...

Yep, hyperbole.

Basically if you get offended by a word, everyone else has to be nice to you and stop using it, but sooner or later someone will say something that will offend you again, another word gone, until only one word is left and no one is going to talk to you if you ban that last word as well.

Hyperbole kicks ass. Ban hyperbole?

Its the switch from printed newspapers and gossip to the internet and facebook I think. Young people can now pick their own news and no longer recognise sarcasm. Everything is taken equally seriously, comedy shows supply news on TV, everything is perceived literally, hyperbole becomes hard to decipher, every small social mistake kids make remains visibly displayed online forever, no wonder they want to be careful with words. Hence sarcasm tickbox.

Imagoamin: I wasnt trying to accuse you of anything, I was trying to explain what I think political correctness leads to - shutting up legitimate voices. It may not be you, but someone out there doesnt like Nigger Jim for example. Now that leads directly to nineteenth century organized moral turpitude - if we pretend the problem doesnt exist it may go away, just dont say the word.

Lots of interesting info but you have to pause every frame to read all the juicy gossip in the sidebar turning this 4 minute video into a half-hour.

Who has that kind of time to burn? I'm late. I'm LATE for a very important date. No time to say hello. Goodbye. I'm late. I'm late. I'm late!

NZ is even worse. She stopped talking to the others a while ago after a big fight, but now she just feels left out and is desperately trying to get back with the others by gossiping about everyone else as much as possible.

And the worst part is, she's actually better than that and deep down, she hates herself for it.

Wanderers - a short film by Erik Wernquist

I have never understood why people would be satisfied with staying where they are. If they lived their entire lives in a forest and told to stay in the clearing, they'd wander out before long.

Why do people NOT want to wander out? What do we stand to gain from staying here? In 400 years time, should we still be worrying about car insurance and celebrity gossip, or would we rather be taking strides into the universe? Which one signifies progress?

What would some of the greek philosophers have said about us, i wonder? I think people have become too familiar with this reality we find ourselves in.. you put someone in the GTA universe, or Saints Row, and they will experiment and enjoy themselves for hours. There's a real world out there with tangible things that we can experiment with.. but people just want to watch TV or drink themselves stupid. Or maybe they're too exhausted to play and be inquisitive because they've been at work all day.

There are a million solid, practical, sound economic reasons not to go into space.

But they are all trumped by the simple fact that if we don't, we have failed as a species.

Clown Panties

It's pretty common for men to do that in comedy, for example the following jokes that have been done to death for years:
- why do women always take so long to get ready ffs!?
- why are women are so emotional/illogical
- why do women talk/gossip a lot
- why do women love to shop/spend my money

That list is long. I've seen enough routines based solely around simply talking about how women are "bitches" (for example) that haven't been seen as sexist so i'd find it hard to criticise this person (who btw is unknown to the rest of the world) for even more subtle sexism.

@chingalera it sounds like you just don't find her funny and don't like her, so maybe you find it easier to take offence to any man bashing. I don't find her funny but i can't say i found anything sexist in this video (as you also say). She certainly hasn't made an impact in britain so i don't know what else she's like - i think i saw her on the roast of charlie sheen, she wasn't funny then either. Steve-o and mike tyson were better but to credit tyson he was so good he deserved a better audience.

Trancecoach said:

Anyone else besides @chingalera picking up a strong misandry vibe in Schumer's comedy? So much of her "comedy" has a "feminist" orientation that seems to do little more than put men down as being merely insensitive, dumb, hypersexual, and dishonest douchebags with no redeeming qualities.

I guess you assume that I'm stupid or something? I don't think I am, I can figure things out and read and a pretty high grade level. Never had any problems in school, just didn't really care to go.

You can assume what you want about me that's fine, I'm not assuming too much about SM because SM doesn't give much at all. If he would explain or cite SOMETHING in his videos I would be able to pin something down and debate it. There's nothing to debate here, it's gossip and bullshit at best.

Oh and Yogi, I'd hasten to guess if you ever had a chance to converse with SM whom you've so smugly dismissed and relegated to some corner of your mind behind a door you've never opened, that yer nutsack would shrivel as much and as fast conversely, as the Grinch who stole xmas' heart grew that day when he looked-down on Whoville...

How to Coil Cables

enoch says...

@carnivorous
not trying to butt in on your penis waving contest (ok.yes i am).
but i think what some here are trying to convey to you are your broad generalizations.

i am sure your points do apply to some of the younger generation but in no way represents ALL of them.

i am getting long in the greys and i know MANY of my generation that expend far too much energy on:social networks, candy crush and full out gossip and complaining (good lord do they complain).

i know this is veering off topic, but its a worthy topic.

my boys are in their twenties.they all are hard workers of the manual persuasion but they are all having a hard go.
this happens and the times are not ripe for an easy run.
do you know what bothers me the most about watching my boys struggle?
the fear.
they are afraid,uncertain and unsure.
when i was their age i was fearless.

when i was their age i was working for my friend who was a lighting director for russell simmons.def jam summer fest world tour baby!
traveled all over the country and the carribean, duffle bag in tow.
learned how to coil cable right proper too.

ok.not at first.
totally screwed that up the first night.
so my buddy made me unravel every inch of cable (even the ones done right by him and others) and learned the hard way how to coil cable proper.
you have any idea how MUCH cable is used for lighting?
well neither do i but im gonna go in measurements of miles (or hours of lost sleep, you decide).

i guess my point is (if i even have one):
manual labor has its advantages but so do intellectual pursuits.
they actually compliment each other.

but dont judge this generation too harshly.
they are afraid,
and uncertain.
something we (or at least I) never really had to deal with on that scale.

and so ends my rambling incoherent rant.
think ill go fix that broken screen door i have been putting off for ages.
yall got me in the mood to fix something.

Michael Shannon Reads the Insane Delta Gamma Sorority Letter

poolcleaner says...

Thanks bookface. I needed another reminder of why -- oh, I'm sorry, HUMANS are crazy. But I don't challenge your inductive assessment (of other people's opinions) that Americans, being human, are also crazy. I grew up there, I know. I deal with these personalities and it warps my own personality DAILY.

It's true, but it's not everyone. Mainly a lot of fucks in charge of various institutions who have maintained their grip on our society because they're shits like this sorority bitch. Though, I'm sure my redundant and filth ridden comments don't help either -- to you overly sensitive.. here's to your fuck you fucks. lol

This letter describes most of the women in my family. They don't care about helping out with the image of our family or the dysfunction, they just gossip (PRAYER CIRCLE AT CHURCH) and then go out on the attack, hitting below the belt.

The kinds of people that mess with your head until you question your manhood -- all of the O.C. girls that I grew up with in the church youth group; sluttin' their shit on the DL, maintaining their pristine image in the light of everyone's faces, and then crying when they don't get their way. "But that's the way mommy told me things work."

I did get a lot of handjobs from slut Christian girls, so I suppose I shouldn't complain. They loooooove to impress you with stories of parties and alcohol. teehee

Bill Nye: Creationism Is Just Wrong!

MilkmanDan says...

Talking Head: "Do you believe that teaching kids that the world is anything but 4.5 billion years old is the same as teaching them that it's flat?"

Nye: "Well... The word 'same'... It's a pretty good analogy."

Meanwhile, before he even finished saying that much, the talking points ticker at the bottom pops up with "Bill Nye on creationism: it's like teaching the Earth is flat".

Thanks CNN. Thanks so much for reducing a complex and thought out response to a blurb that even a bite-sized, 24-hour news cycle brain can manage. God forbid you give the expert that you've invited onto your show a full 60 seconds of uninterrupted time to speak, without putting words into his mouth for him before he even says them. What if he runs long and cuts into celebrity breakup gossip hour? I tell you what, everybody sees the fall of print journalism coming but with stuff like this televised "news" can't be far behind.

Bald for Bieber

bareboards2 says...

From Calgary Herald:
Call it a tragic turn of events or a bald-faced lie. Rumours began circulating Thursday afternoon that Canadian pop star Justin Bieber had been diagnosed with cancer, prompting an outpouring of support from avid Beliebers – many of whom went as far as shaving their heads.

The gossip mill initially began spinning out of control thanks to a tweet from Entertainment Tonight’s official Twitter account (@ETonlineAlert) that stated:

“Pop star Justin Bieber was diagnosed with cancer earlier this morning. Bieber fans are shaving their heads to show support.”

The tweet was quickly deleted, but not before #BaldForBieber began trending.

No official comment regarding the rumours has surfaced from the 18-year-old star, however, his bodyguard Kenny Hamilton took to his Twitter account (@KennyHamilton) to deny the cancer diagnosis.

Anonymous Exposes Ron Paul

criticalthud says...

I'm curious, how many other candidates have received campaign contributions from white supremacists? Are they the only group of supremacists that has any impact with their contribution? Does their contribution even mean anything, other than that they're now poorer? Because if most or even all the candidates have, at some point, gotten money from one or more supremacists, wouldn't it be a moot point to specifically attack Paul on that issue?
I'm not trying to be clever or passively aggressively making jabs at you, I'm not from the US so I don't really know how the politics of election work there, hence the many questions.
It does seem strange, however, that simply receiving money from someone would somehow implicate you in any way as siding with their views. It kind of feels more like conjecture and gossip instead of politics, and what I would focus on to discredit him instead, if it'd been an election in my country, would be on what Paul actually says about his views. For instance that clip of him saying he doesn't believe in the theory of evolution, which is a statement he would certainly have to expand on before becoming viable for an electoral position of any capacity.

inclined to agree.
I get the feeling it would be fairly easy to link Obama with the Black Panthers or some other less mainstream group rather easily.

and it would seem that Libertarianism vs. any other "ism" going right now is the most favorable to white supremacists. ... So, just because the white supremacists likes ron paul doesn't necessarily mean ron paul likes them.

plus he "should" be smarter than political suicide.

still, all things considered, i wouldn't vote for him because he's a bible-thumping idiot.
but i would vote for him just to see what happens. lol!
