The 1940s Mermaid Show That's Still Pulling Crowds

notarobot says...

Visited there during a trip to Florida as a kid. I probably had more fun on the rides at Busch Gardens, but my memories from Weeki Wachee Springs had greater staying power.

What I remember most from Universal Studios that trip is long line ups.

Fans react to Black Panther poster

Lambozo says...

jimnms, having seen the movie, I can see why people are reacting this positively to it. Have you seen it? Where you have or havent, consider the following.

You are right that this isn't the first black superhero movie. If you ignore comedies starring goofy concept heros, the list of movies narrows. Then, consider movies with black super heros who are not anti-heroes (Spawn, Blade). Why this distinction? Anti-heroes are great, but they aren't characters for a general young audience to aspire to. To notice that the majority of main character superheroes in movies are either partially a joke or a dark/brooding/scary/threatening/antisocial hero might be a drag. especially when you compare it to the pool of white super heroes who aren't (most of them). That's important.

First movie with a mostly black cast? No, but how many such movies arent about slavery, inner city gangs, extreme poverty, surviving racism, genocide or third world conflict. How many are almost purely optimistic blend of science fiction and the beauty of African culture? How many imagine what an African country unmolested by colonialism might look like in the future, where its citizens were allowed to reach their highest potential in terms of culture, government and technology? This is in part what the Afro-futurism science fiction genre is about and its a very rare genre to make it to film.

Especially a film that has a budget of $ 200 million dollars. That budget is important. It says that at this point in history, the largest (maybe?) movie studio recognizes that the public wants to see black characters in this light. That's a big deal too.

And considering how well this movie is doing at the box office, Black Panther is a signal of whats to come. More stories about inspirational black characters told at this kind of block buster scale.

Does that make a bit more sense? I'm sure there are other reasons; one being its a really good movie! Hope this helps.

Thanks I was pretty impressed by how close to the original he got, even though his kit probably cost less than one VOX AC30 amp... without even getting to microphones, instruments, and an entire studio.

Aliens Movie - "Get Away from her, you bitch!"

CrushBug says...

Aliens was one of the first movies I watched on Laser Disc and the first time I saw a "director's cut" of a movie. My cousin and I were watching along and suddenly there was a scene with sentry guns. We were like, "WTF?" We had seen Aliens twice in the theater and rented it on VHS a few more, and had never seen this scene before.

That was when I learned that the version of the movie released to tape and on other pay to view formats, was at the purview of studios, but Laser Discs weren't covered in their contracts, thus affording directors the ability to add deleted scenes that they wanted in the original theatrical release.

That was when we started renting other Laser Discs and started seeing longer movies, such as The Abyss with the original, longer ending, Terminator 2, with more scenes of the T-1000 breaking down, and some others. Hmmm, I just noticed that the last 2 I listed, and Aliens, were all James Cameron movies. Neat.

"It doesn't matter if it's good, as long as it makes money."

Asmo says...

Depends how you define failure? If it makes a bunch of money but is shit, it's successful to the suits but a failure to the fans.

CoD games are a great example of this.

If it's critically hailed by fans but doesn't squirt out the bucks (Firefly/Serenity, Babylon 5 etc), it doesn't matter how well it's received by the fans because it may not ever continue as a franchise.

More to the point, if you subjectively enjoy a piece of shit, are you wrong? Because TLJ, imo, is a turd. You seemed to enjoy it. Who is right? Both? Neither? Does it matter?

In the end, what we see on screen is a factor of studios looking for stuff that will make a fortune, not what is going to make a great film in terms of artistic merit. If they cared about artistic merit, there are dozens of fantastic stories in the SW extended universe novels that could have been picked as starting points for 7/8/9. The stories of Grand Admiral Thrawn or Rogue Squadron for example.

A shit aggregated score will not prevent Ep 9 from coming out so why does it matter? Hopefully it might spur the writers on to actually putting together a story that isn't the equivalent of the OJ chase in space, but I'm not holding my breath.

Death Stranding new trailer 2018

iaui says...

At the high end, video games are really in the process of transforming into interactive movies. And curiously, vice versa in some situations. Like all of the Oats Studios stuff is 'almost' video games. All of their ADAM series is made using Unity, which is a common, powerful video game engine/development studio. Exciting times.

Though I still recommend staying away, if you can manage

That's some hardcore stuff right there.

Freaking wow. I've always considered video game storylines pfft a waste of time, but this I could get into (if I were to ever play video games again, which of course I won't).

Camerawork and editing sucks. Thought I was going to have an epileptic seizure. The studio sound didn't fit the location.
