Why Do People Still Think The Earth Is Flat?

bobknight33 says...

200 feet of string at the beach just does not do it.

If you want definitive proof .-----

Instead of paying 300 bucks to go this this ---

Hop in a plane and look out at the curvature of the earth.

Nuff said.

Penn Jillette: The Case For Libertarianism

Drachen_Jager says...

Libertarianism is for teenagers and idiots.

Any well-adjusted adult with any ability for critical thinking can see how stupid this is. Even his premise is idiotic. The government doesn't use guns to enforce parking violations (for example) they certainly don't use guns to provide healthcare to people. When was the last time a bus driver pointed a gun at you and said, "Get on the bus, it's public transit, cars are illegal now!"

Just because America has a lousy political system and therefore generally a string of bad governments, does not mean government is bad. It just means American government is bad. The countries with the highest levels of citizen happiness, the greatest spread of wealth, the highest education standards, the longest lifespans, the lowest infant mortality rates, the lowest crime rates, all have the kinds of governments Libertarians rail against.

Libertarianism, in summary, is childish, stupid, and immoral. No big surprise @bobknight33 is a fan then.

Shannon Sharpe on Trump, NFL and Protest

newtboy says...

So..which is it? The company dictates the rules (in which case stop your bullshit whining because the owners all stand with the protest) or some new draconian theory where freedom of speech only exists at home in your own yard (unless the president likes your message, then violent protest is patriotic anywhere)?

Trump is only pointing out how uppity these negros got under the darky president, and he's going to make America great again by fixing that.

You really...REALLY need a civics class, Bob. It's obvious that, if you've ever taken one, the information didn't stick.
Are you even aware that the "tradition" of teams standing at attention is 8 years old and a paid for marketing ploy for the military's recruitment where players are encouraged, but not required, to stand facing the flag at attention.

Trump's claim that this is about lack of gratitude is just one more in an endless string of lies and misdirection. I would think you would be sick of being jerked around like that, but clearly not yet. That's just as true as his claim shortly afterwards that the repeal and replace bill had passed....(it didn't even get a vote), or his claim that his new tax plan won't benefit him (but using his last available taxes as a true representation of his finances, it would save him around $1 BILLION and raise the rates on the poorest by at least 20%).
The peaceful protest is about racial inequality...which Trump highlights quite well, even as he denies it's existence.

NFL product and ticket sales, and total viewers are reportedly up. ESPN is only one network of dozens.

Nothing to do about racism just good old American patriotism..

I can't go around wearing a Trump or Obama hat while on the job as I meet customers.... Company dictate rules of conduct. Politics do not belong in the work environment.

Trump is only properly pointing out how ungrateful some are by disrespect the very unity of America activity of standing for the National Anthem..

Sales of NFL tickets and clothing and ESPN ratings will dictate the true direction of this .

VICE covers Charlottesville. Excellent

Drachen_Jager says...

I know it's a terrible thought.

But...

Wouldn't it be hilarious to throw a string of firecrackers in the middle of these gun-toting maniacs when things get tense.

I know, I know, I'm a bad person.

Autumn Leaves - Yenne Lee plays 2004 Pepe Romero Jr.

ulysses1904 says...

I loved this. My father was a fan of the Carlos Jobim bossa nova records popular in the 60s and my first guitar was a nylon string he gave me when I was 12.

This clip brings me back to that unique sound, makes me want to go buy a nylon sting guitar and throw away my picks for awhile.

Philip Glass joue Mad Rush

BSR says...

As far as I know, this is a piano solo. But at certain times I can hear strings and brass. Although you can't see the whole orchestra I'm pretty sure no other instruments join in. Is it possible he's that good to create the essence of strings and brass with just the keyboard?

Example: from 2:45 - 4:00

And the woman in the right side background, with her knitted brow, seems very touched by the piece or she's thinking, "let's speed this up a bit."

Penn & Teller's Helium Bag Escape Trick

justaguess says...

I'm thinking that the bag was open at the bottom when Teller stepped in. He stays upright long enough for us to see that his head is in the bag, then quickly crouches, pops under at the bottom, and seals the bag after himself.

He tugs gently on the bottom to remain hidden, and so the guy holding the string doesn't notice the weight change.

We never get to see the bottom, because the lights are still too dim immediately after he is revealed.

The helium quickly lifts the bag too high for us to see the bottom, but it does have a sort of heart shape at one point, suggesting a seal in the middle of the bottom, rather than the straight edge a factory-made bag would have.

New Rule: The Lesser of Two Evils

ChaosEngine says...

Democracy is ALWAYS the lesser of two evils. No candidate (even St Bernie) is perfect .

Look at France. They've just elected Emmanuel Macron. Nobody has much a clue who this guy was yet he won nearly 2/3 of the vote. Why? Because the other option was Marine Le fucking Pen, someone who makes Trump look inclusive. Although at least she could string a sentence together, even if it was generally openly evil.

The point is that given the choice between mediocrity and evil, you be a grown up about it and choose mediocrity. Yeah, it sucks, but life sucks sometimes... deal with it. If you decide to "let the system burn", then you and your matrix trenchcoat that you thought was cool in 99 deserve everything you get.

Quantum Mechanics (Now with Added Ducks) - exurb1a

AeroMechanical says...

I dunno about that. There's lots of scientific evidence for quantum mechanics. It was disagreement between experimental results and theory which lead to the development of quantum mechanics in the first place. There have definitely been repeatable experiments demonstrating quantum entanglement, for instance.

String Theory, now, that's where you've got your unprovable assumptions. Whereas quantum mechanics at least has a big "we don't know why this is" hole in the middle, the string theory guys would just posit the existence of a bunch more dimensions to make the equations work.

Not that I actually understand the mathematics of any of it, mind you.

Spacedog79 said:

Quantum physics makes extraordinary claims and at the same time asks us to lower our standards of scientific rigour by accepting unprovable assumptions. You can have one or the other but never both.

Ricky Gervais And Colbert Go Head-To-Head On Religion

vil says...

Wait @harlequinn take a step back from the borders of advanced theoretical physics back to practical stuff like geometry and astronomy and measuring time and heating stuff and using other sources of power than slave labour.

Religion did not get us far in many areas.

If science had to start all over again maybe quarks and strings would look different, but steam engines would be the same. Heart transplants would be very similar. Other parts of medicine might not.
