Arnold Schwarzenegger Has A Blunt Message For Nazis

JustSaying says...

BASF is a huge german corporation that produced Zyklon B, the gas used in Ausschwitz to kill thousands of people. They're still going strong. It is by far not the only german corporation that benefitted greatly from the Holocaust. Take IBM for example, they delivered card-computing systems to manage concentration camp popula... Oh shit! IBM is american, my bad.
The Bundeswehr, the german military, was run by Nazi Generals in its early years. Just this year there were several scandals concerning Neo Nazis among their ranks.
A lot of people benefited from the atrocities of the third Reich. Don't kidd yourself. Remember, Hitler hired Ferdinand Porsche to develop the Volkswagen. The development of the VW Beetle was started by the Fuehrer.

BTW....because you seem confused, no one ever was forced under penalty of death to keep slaves, and very few Nazi's families benefited after the fact from having been Nazis....it's not the same thing by far.

Straight is the new gay - Steve Hughes

I live in NZ. There's very much a "she'll be right" attitude to H&S here. And in some ways, it's great. It's easier to set up sports clubs, if you want to go in the wilderness, you're pretty much on your own, etc.

But the flip side is the fact that we have a terrible rate of injuries and actual deaths in industry, especially in agriculture and forestry.

And quite honestly, I think this "H&S gone mad" attitude is actually promoted by companies who don't want to pay to keep their employees safe. And that's not hyperbole, there is literally an ongoing investigation into a company that skimped on safety resulting in the deaths of 29 miners.

I agree it can be taken too far, and maybe the UK really is insane, but in my experience, it's one of those things that people whine about when they don't understand the reasons behind it.

PC, we'll agree to disagree.

Smoking: again smoke if you want to, but just not around me. Why should I have to put up with smoke when I'm having a meal? More importantly, why should the staff who have to work there, have to put up with a toxic environment?

As for the competition argument, it doesn't really hold water. A few pubs in Ireland preempted the smoking ban, and they went out of business, because there's almost always one person in a group that smokes. Having it as a law makes a level playing field.

I've been in three countries now when smoking was banned in pubs. Every time, the hospitality industry said it would be the death of them. 10 years later, no one gives a damn. People still go to pubs and a lot less people smoke. It worked.

That one was cool. Very interesting to try to infer what their algorithms / strategies are based purely on their emergent behavior.

I'd label 3:46 a "come at me bro" strategy -- present a target and attempt escape when the opponent charges.

Lots of "spirograph / can't hit what you can't see" in there. Never sit still, go straight until the edge of the ring is detected, turn and repeat.

And the "matadors" are also very interesting, with their distracting / confusing actuated flags.

As an aside, I'd assume there are weight classes?

When Windows 10 makes you racist

ChaosEngine says...

To be fair, this isn't actually a problem, unless you're an idiot like this guy. I've been running Windows 10 since it came out and never once HAD to shut down in the middle of something to install an update.

That said, you shouldn't switch from OSX for the same reason I won't switch TO osx.... change cost.

Even these days, switching to another ecosystem is still going to cost you weeks of time, so unless there's an incredibly compelling reason to switch, there's just no point.

Senator McCain's Bizarre Questioning To James Comey

newtboy says...

Not at all.
Besides confusing names repeatedly, he could not grasp the difference between Comey announcing the Clinton email investigation was over, with no charges pending, and the continuing investigation over Russian involvement in the election. He repeatedly accuses Comey of giving Clinton a pass, saying she's been cleared...'but the Russian probe is still going, so how is she cleared and Trump isn't?' He simply can't understand they are two separate cases, and Clinton was involved in both....as the victim in the latter. She was NEVER a suspect in the Russian interference investigation, but everyone near Trump still is, with more connections coming to light weekly (despite their denials and efforts to hide them).

If he were younger, people would be accusing him of being high or in the midst of a total mental breakdown, not just being tired and old.

Briguy1960 said:

I didn't get that at all from watching it but maybe it was the title that had me on the lookout for clear signs.
Sure he fumbled with the pres and comey bit but other than that he was simply sticking to his point until he hopefully squeezed out some answers.
People misspeak a word or two all of the time in these things.
If he were younger one wonders what the fuss would be all about.

Biker cut off but lands safely... ish

notarobot says...

Just because you have the right of way does not mean you are safe.

If you pause at the 12-second mark you can see the biker is going 80mph. Is the speed limit 80mph? Leading up to the accident, he's passing other cars like they are standing still. Going much faster (or slower) than traffic around you always increases your risk.

He's traveling too quick for conditions, or even for his own reactions and brakes.

Reddit thread about him: https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/6cj4i8/motorcycle_got_cut_off_on_la_freeway/dhv4h38/

The accident is the fault of the car that pulled out, but this biker could have avoided the accident altogether if he had slowed down to comparable speeds of the traffic around him.

But what would he do that for? He's a youtube asshole who took down other videos of him being an asshole who now has one of his vids go viral to the point that he makes money off it. Insurance will cover the repairs to his bike.

Look at how he drives: https://streamable.com/jewxu

He's a cocky asshole who instigates problems on the road.

So yeah, the car that pulled in front is technically at fault. That doesn't make this guy some kind of angel. It's possible he consciously allowed himself to hit the car....

I don't want to imply that this was the motorcyclists fault, because it wasn't, but that was a shit-ass reaction time on the emergency braking. You can see him roll off the throttle and grab the brake as soon as he sees the car moving over, which is good, but then it's clear the car is moving into the carpool lane and... nothing... he just keeps rolling forward...

At 0:20.5 he clearly identifies the threat, by 0:21.0 the car is in his lane, he's off the throttle, and his fingers are on the front brake, and then... he doesn't do anything... just keeps rolling at the same speed... rolling... rolling... he doesn't squeeze the front brake until well over a second and like 100 feet later around 0:22.25 when he's barely 20 feet behind the car, and even then he doesn't brake particularly hard at all.

I moto-commute on this same road and shit like this happens every single day, it happens so often that you should expect it to happen every time and react accordingly. You just have to be way better prepared for it than this. There was plenty of time for him to simply brake and avoid that guy. Plenty.

Technically!?!
The bike was in the carpool lane, where travelling faster than other traffic is expected, that's why the lane exists. He was not going inordinately fast, traffic in the fast lane was going pretty slow.
The car crossed two lanes and a double yellow line without looking or matching traffic speed in the lane(s) it was entering. Any one of those mistakes is enough to make this technically the car's fault, all 3 together leaves no question and removes the technicality completely.

100% the car's fault. Not even 1% the bike's fault. He did absolutely nothing wrong.

Why Do Marvel's Movies Look Kind of Ugly?

kir_mokum says...

colour grading as in DI is "new" and related to digital film but colour timing, which is the analogue method, goes back to the start of film making.

i've done work for several marvel films, their DI is generally pretty subtle. the raw footage def. has blacks (and negative values in the blacks). the new cameras used wont change this unless they want to change it. the colour gamut has been wide the whole time. OCIO colour may have a certain effect but i can't see it having the colour effect wanted here.

@AeroMechanical is exactly right. the new cameras aren't going to change shit. they're still going to grade the movies to be consistent with past movies. and they've fully had the latitude to grade them in a more vibrant manner the whole time.

and as far as rereleasing them as "UHD Blu-Ray box set" (i'm assuming 4K UHD), they can't. they were all done in HD or 2K (at least the ones i've worked on). uprezing is possible (4K outside of a theatre is actually pretty bullshit, you can uprez HD uncompressed to 4K without that much effect) but resolution doesn't change colour grading/DI.

AeroMechanical said:

So, he takes great pains to point out the problem isn't the camera they used, but then says the new ones are probably going to be better because they'll be using a different camera?

Honest Trailers - Ghostbusters (2016)

00Scud00 says...

We're not YouTube (thankfully) but the overall feeling was that this is still going to suck.

mas8705 said:

Really is a shame that they had to turn off comments in their video. Then again, considering how the 2016 Ghostbusters was somehow more offensive than Donald Trump (at the time anyway), I'm just questioning the definition of insanity.

Was there any talk on Videosift when Ghostbusters was announced? And the kind of backlash that was almost as bad as it was everywhere else?

Houston Helicopter Officer Lands and Tackles Suspect

Digitalfiend says...

Oh calm down. I didn't say criminals don't deserve to be apprehended but police officers do need to maintain a certain level of professionalism. What if that officer had run over that *suspect* and killed him? Oops, no trial for him I guess? I'm certainly not suggesting that the guy fleeing from the cops in this video isn't a criminal but he isn't waving a gun around so ramming him with a car seems a bit heavy handed. The police in other countries can manage to apprehend suspects without going all Dukes of Hazard on them. That's all I'm getting at.

As to your other point, complying with overzealous, trigger-happy police officers doesn't guarantee that you aren't still going to end up with a boot in your face or a bullet in you. There have been enough incidents in the news that support that view. Here is one example.

Anyhow I think the officer unintentionally slid his car into the suspect; he probably only meant to cut him off and didn't anticipate the lack of traction lost on the grass.

10/Ten Geeky Easter Eggs You Can Find in Real Life

The Most Costly Joke in History

newtboy says...

So, you're saying it CAN'T do the job the A-10 does, but it's still going to replace it.
Fast moving screamers were not capable of doing the job we need, so we created the tank killer-Warthog. If this replaces the warthog, but can't do what it can, it makes us LESS capable. Fast runs with bombs simply don't do the job we need, and slow and low runs with bomblets or an auto cannon just won't work with this plane.
I'm pretty sure it's just as useless against some of the other enemies/situations it's supposed to take on, and even if I'm 100% wrong about that, it's so expensive it doesn't matter. We can't afford to lose one, so we can't afford to use them.

transmorpher said:

The close air support style of the A-10 won't be around once they retire the A-10's. Helicopters and drones will do something similar, but in terms of planes delivering bombs it's just going to be fast movers screaming past so fast and high that man-portable missiles systems won't be able to reach.
