George Takei takes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Januari says...

@Spoof is absolutely correct, their fundraising has gone through the roof this year! And i suspect is going to continue for sometime.

I think what these comments are really reflecting is how willing people are to spout their opinion and ignorance as fact without taking the 30 seconds to search and avail themselves of facts... @VoodooV Your better than that!

George Takei takes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

lucky760 says...

He is a 77-year-old man. More ice water than that could have killed him.

And as @Spoof said, it's definitely not doing nothing. When these things first started popping up I was mainly annoyed because they didn't explain what it was; they just said "You obviously know about the ice bucket challenge because it's all over social media," but I don't participate in social media and I still didn't know what it was about!

My personal outrage aside, it initially seemed to me that the challenge was "take the ice bucket or make a donation," and I just kept thinking, "Why don't these cheapskate celebrities just make a donation instead of goofing around?" but the proof is in the pudding: this marketing campaign has yielded over 300% more money for the cause than it would have earned without it. (I'm glad George mentioned he's also made a donation.)

So, it's obviously untrue that this crap doesn't actually DO anything productive.

Takei wussed out, that was an absolutely trivial amount of water that got dumped on him.

Pete Holmes and Conan - Is Pete's Dad Really Peter Griffin?

artician says...

I never knew Pete Holmes until his incredibly annoying X-men spoofs. Since then I have watched a number of his standup gigs (more awesome than not), and I've developed a real appreciation for the guy. You can't really fake this kind of earnestness and humility.

Honest Trailers - Gravity

MilkmanDan says...

(some spoilers here, although not really anything that wasn't in the video)
I thought it was quite good. Not great, but quite good.

That being said, the one thing that I was sure that an "honest trailers" spoof/take on it would include was left out: I lost count of how many times the last propulsive jet before they ran out of thrust in whatever system/mechanism they were using was just enough to get them into "precarious grab, slip and bump off into another precarious grab".

Gorgeous George jets around as carefree as can be -- fetching bolts, unhitched and drifting Sandra ... even the corpse of "man down in the first 5 minutes". He or others talk about how he is going for the record longest spacewalk many times. But then, when they really need it, "oh, sorry, I've just got enough juice left for one more burn".

Same thing repeats for the Soyuz, the Wall-E extinguisher, and conceptually in many other instances.

That is the aspect of the flick that stood out the most for me as begging for a good send-up.

How fast will the Russian Hackers takedown the tourists?

schlub says...

#1) It's called fear-mongering and the media loves it
#2) There are various exploits available to intercept wireless communications.
#3) New computers are set up for the lay-person who doesn't know the first thing about security and thus has many security features turned off.
#4) It's EASY to spoof 802.11 WiFi access points and act as a man-in-the-middle
#5) 3G/4G are not very secure protocols and are similar to 802.11/802.16
#6) I really doubt there are legions of hackers standing at the ready to take all UR DATAZ. These are most certainly automated attacks.
#7) Apple computers suck bloated donkey balls.
