Even Pat Robertson Attacks Young Earth Theory As A "Joke"

jones1899 says...

Some people are never satisfied. Personally, I'm so tired of the extremists views on both sides (and believe me, Pat Robertson is often the source of pretty nasty extreme views) that this was actually refreshing. Some people are just so cynical, they can't appreciate anything less than Pat Robertson and Jesus himself coming forward as atheists.

Here's my view on it for those who may care:

Religion is pretty worthless. Sure it's been the cause of lots of horrible (and good) things through history, but it's also an attempt to combine what some deem as fact with something that's so beyond fact that we can't even comprehend it. It's man made. Full of errors and contradictions, blah, blah, blah. We all know that. Basically it all just falls apart whenever you try to throw science in there. It's like judging an apple by the standards of screwdriver.

So let's look at just the spiritual side of things. This is where I hang out. I see it as something beyond science (though uses science as it's tool) and factual understanding. It goes beyond nitpicking this fact and that falsehood. It's just a thing in the air that you can either be in touch with or not. If you are (and I am) then it fills a gap. Gives you hope. Comfort. Peace. Lots of things that are indescribable. But you feel better when you have it and you can't choose to believe in it or not. You just do. If you don't buy into it, then there is no gap to begin with. Doesn't make you smarter or better. You just have different needs.

Now maybe that means that in some dark recess of your psyche that if you're in touch with this spiritual side of things, then you die believing you'll be in an amazing place for eternity. And so you are. Or you don't believe, and so you aren't. Neither is better or worse compared to the other because they have no business being compared to the other. They don't coexist. They just both exist.

I think whatever it is that you believe in sets a standard for your life. Following those things, being true to those things, is what it's all about. This completes you. You can't force them on others or yourself for that matter. You can't punish others for not playing by your rules. You just have to play by your own (as long as you don't harm others).

And I'm tired of spiritualism HAVING to mean pure magic. Science is magic. Science is the most amazing magic. Does things you'd never believe. It's not an insult. It's just makes the whole damn system that much more incredible. If you choose to call that magic, go right ahead. It's just a word. Before long we'll realize that science can do things magic only dreamed of and that's pretty damn magical.

By the way, I'm not typing this trying to change anyone's mind or act like it's some kind of original thought. I'm just typing some thoughts. I like this kind of shit. Debates are great and healthy. I'm just sick of people hating on or insulting folks for believing in their heart something that's different.

Finnick's Trident (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire)

Stormsinger says...

That's not a trident...that's a three-bladed axe.

I'm so tired of the Hollywood bullshit that more blades = better. There's a reason you never saw three-bladed swords or axes historically...because they're just not as effective as one or two blades.

Going to the Doctor in America

scheherazade says...

Funny.

My doctors had the same answer (minus the finger part) even with insurance.
I find it painful to even go to them. So tired of being 'passed along' soon as I get in there.

"Ah, you have symptoms. Well, they don't sound like the usual stuff, so we don't know. Get rest, take some Tylenol, hope you feel better. NEXT."

Mumford & Sons - Hopeless Wanderer

Procrastinatron says...

I hadn't even noticed that the loathing of this band had become so ubiquitous as to become cliché.

I'm pretty happy about it, though.

Really, I'm just so tired of all these retro-fetishist, nature-romanticist hipsters with their beards and their work boots and their flannel shirts, treating masculinity as an accessory because they honestly just don't know any better. They're all just perpetual adolescents who for the life of them cannot seem to figure out what it means to become an adult. So they try to find shortcuts.

Dylan was pretentious, but he was also a genius lyricist. Seriously, no bandwagon here, and I don't know if I'd call him the greatest songwriter of all time, but... he was good. Dylan was also highly political, and could be fairly incisive, while these confused little boys, all these hipster douchebags who seem to think that honesty can be bought at a thrift store, only ever sing about flowers and trees and broken hearts.

And they're all the same. Always. As a group, they are so homogenous that it becomes offensive to me.

George W. On PRISM

You say; " He's satisfied that history shall continue to be manipulated in a favorable light for himself and his ilk."
It is getting so tiring reading the opinions of you, and the likes of you, who do nothing but glibly criticize politicians, their policies, actions and personalities.
Instead of childish "terminator" jokes why don't you, for our edification, enlighten us as to how YOU would run things if you could be arsed to do the necessaries, and become an instigator of change. Of course you can't, because you wouldn't have a clue about policy, instigation of policy, ramifications and, well, anything. Constructive criticism is necessary, and can change things, but simply sitting at your comfortable desk spewing bile, discontent, and vitriol, is not.

Don't believe the hype-He's satisfied that history shall continue to be manipulated in a favorable light for himself and his ilk. Just imagine him saying everything in the Terminator voice, "Your gradditude iz nod-regwired. I am programd to fallow deah commandz."

Now say the same thing with the Obama voice....

Guns, Paranoia and The American Family

Jinx says...

Oh please. I'm so tired of this comparison to cars. Can you not see the difference between a weapon designed to kill or injure with only niche use and a car? Hey, if cars are so fucking dangerous why not use them to defend yourselves :3

But hey, I agree with you on lifestyle. Its obviously not healthy, but people are choosing to do it to themselves, you aren't putting others at risk by being obese. By all means stop advertising fast food to children, improve physical eduction at schools and lets all start talking about mental health, but don't drop that argument as if it makes the gun control one go away.

Let's talk about death. Ban fast food, ban alcohol, ban the bucket soda. America is unhealthy and living a consumer/me first life style. The problem isn't with the guns -- it is with the people. It's the "have's" and the "have not's". The divide has only grown. I'm so tired of the gun issue. How about talking about cars. There are far more traffic deaths than gun deaths in the US. Hell there are a lot more deaths from a few kids to bullets. I hate saying it, but we look a blind eye to it.

Go sue GM, Ford, McDonalds, <insert factory>

For far as Europe vs. US... How does a young country of US fair against the centuries of mishaps the collective group of europe have made?

At least we tried to learn from your fuck ups.

One Pissed Off Democrat in Michigan Speaks Up

bareboards2 says...

@renatojj I agree that the vilification of "profit" is also bad. I roll my eyes all the time at silly stuff I read that uses the word "profit" like the very word is sin incarnate. After all, wages are the "profit" of your labor, right?

Everyone wants theirs. I'm so tired of the finger pointing. It's always the other guy, for some people.

And. The pursuit of profit by shipping jobs overseas, @snoozedoctor, is short sighted pursuit of profit at the expensive of the health of our society. And our environment -- cheap goods means more crap in the landfill, more wasted resources.

It is a complex topic that cannot be solved in soundbites and protest banners. And the sooner we can step back from an "adversarial" relationship, the better, yeah?

This Cover of Radiohead Song "Creep" is Amazing!!!

Nice cover and a beautiful voice, but TBH the mix kills it for me.
That "breathy hipster singing"? Yeah, wouldn't be so tiring if the guy behind the mixer didn't rub our noses..erm, ears in it so much.

EA in a Nutshell

Fletch says...

In reply to this comment by dannym3141:
Take bioware for example. Before they were 'bought' by EA they made some of the (arguably, but almost universally accepted) best games of their particular genre. Baldur's gate 1 and 2, neverwinter nights....

Forgot about Bioware. They're on my list as well. They used to be an automatic buy, but DA2... EA is poison to game companies.

It's difficult to explain to young'uns who were raised on consoles why old-school PC gamers are so disappointed in the current state of PC gaming. This whole backlash that PC gamers are "elitist crybabies" is just so tired. I have a gaming mouse and a 104 keys, yet many PC games are designed for multiple platforms, and, unfortunately, the lowest common denominator is an ADD-addled console player with a gamepad. The result is cookie-cutter dross that is only made discernible in its genre by the textures and artwork that make up its world. I'm not saying great AAA pc games aren't being made any more, just that there are so few, and this move by developers towards always-online DRM for single-player gaming (Ubisoft, Blizzard) limits my choices even more, as I refuse to support that bullshit.

I still play through Doom and Doom2 about once a year and have a blast every time. I'm about halfway through yet another run of Diablo II, and I'm thinking I'll fire up Planescape: Torment or Baldur's Gate after that. So many excellent older games to play and replay, not to mention the large number of quality indie games being released. I don't miss Diablo III one bit.
