Hiker Followed By Bears

newtboy says...

I'm happy that I have run into bears here. It makes me feel like our area isn't as devoid of wildlife as many places are.
We have all those listed, plus skunks, possums, gophers, salamanders, elk, and yes, bears. Once I even saw a porcupine walking down the highway.
Twice I've had bears cross a river less than 50 ft from me while I was fishing just blocks from home, and before I built my fence they ravaged my apple trees every year with the elk and deer.
It's still a possibility that a bear is what paralyzed our puppy in our yard last June. We never found out what happened to her, and she's not talking, but she is up and walking.

I hope I never run into bears in my rural area! I only had seen birds, coyotes, dogs, humans, snakes, butterflies, (w/rabbit)s, horses, bun(nie)s, cat (just one), squirrels, raccoon, etc.

Nope

In the limited times that I've been around skunks, it definitely seemed possible to watch them from a safe distance and be in basically no danger of being sprayed. If there's a dog around, that gets a lot riskier fast though.

There's definitely a risk vs reward calculation to be made there. I think the reward of seeing some nature first-hand would have been enough to keep me on the porch if I was the guy in the video, but I'd have been pretty cautious about it. And I can't fault him for opting for "NOPE" either.

He missed out on an awesome experience.
There were skunks living under the tree in our front yard in Toronto, and when I'd sit on the front steps the babies would all come over and stand up in a line with their noses peeking over the bottom step.
Don't bother the family and nobody gets sprayed. You really have to harass or scare them for it to happen.

Asperger's Man Hijacks 100+ Trains/Busses, Arrested 32 Times

Not giving him help is punishment.
I hope he can get a job running a train, he's clearly good at it. Maybe he should apply to the Ft Bragg skunk train. There's no other public transportation there to tempt him.

I'm very confused by the person holding the camera. She has tiny baby feet that look like they belong to a child, but they're also tattooed (and with skulls and crossbones nonetheless) so they look like they belong to an adult.

what gives...

skunk owners. amirite.

The bravest thing he's ever done...

My neighbor's cat was sitting in the street at night under a streetlight and I watched a skunk zig-zagging up the road towards him. The cat just sat there watching and as the skunk got closer I figured this was not going to end well. The suspense was killing me and then the skunk finally waddled up, touched noses with the cat and went on its way. The End. Sleep well.

Batch o' Bouncing Baby Feisty Ferrets

newtboy says...

Not to mention that they have scent glands like skunks (and all other weasels I think). They can be removed, but the smell never goes completely away.
I had a pair as a teenager. They are illegal in California, so I had to give them up when my family moved here from Texas. Not cool.

Their habits are similar to cats actually, they will tongue wash themselves like they do. The smell isn't a hygiene issue, that's just how ferrets smell, I had them for years and eventually I just got used to it. Most pets have some kind of smell to them, but since ferrets are less common than cats or dogs I suspect people have stronger reactions to them.
