Ubuntu/9.04 (jaunty) Firefox/3.0.10

Does *not* work on:
- Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.21) Gecko/20090402

Looks like Gecko v1.8.1 won't work on embedded nbc.com videos?

The $129.000 VW Campervan

spawnflagger says...

This is nice art, but the thing could never be realized as shown.
Well, maybe realized as a small plastic barbie van.

says its hybrid, but there's no place for motor, batteries, gas tank, axles, etc. heck they even removed the spare tire. but woohoo! we got 4 folding chairs in the engine compartment.

With all of the body panels that fold out (i.e. provide no structural support), I'd really love to see this thing do a crash test

Who camps in a vehicle with 3" ground clearance? hope you are camping in walmart parking lots, cause that ain't making it down any dirt roads.

Where's the porta-potty? every RV has one of those at least...

I generally like int'l music, but this was like someone screaming at you in swahili. not pleasant at all.

The $129.000 VW Campervan

It's worth noting that in the US, in numbers we use commas where Europeans use periods, and periods where they use commas.

And considering how hardcore some VW Bus owners are, I do expect more than a few people to want to spring for one. At 129K, it's being priced against RVs and campers that aren't nearly as fuel-efficient (which the economy has hit hard - I had a friend who used to work at an RV assembly plant, but there were big lay offs since demand has just plain died). I'd imagine that the TCO would be less than a similarly equipped RV or camper, making it a wiser long-term investment.

At 69K, you'd still have something you could take camping for a more barebones experience - if you already have good camping gear, you don't really need the extra 60K worth of bells and whistles. (My mom was a girl scout troop leader, and did a TON of camping trips wit her girls over the years - I did boy scouts for a while, and really only learned knot-tying, which my girlfriend appreciates - we camp frequently over the summer at Renaissance Faire events).

I'd expect this to be pretty popular with the Burning Man crowd.

Caution and a firewall are enough to protect you from the vast majority of threats. It's been years since I last saw a virus/worm/exploit that didn't rely at least partially on social engineering.

Antivirus is always helpful. Avoid anything that tries to replace the Windows Firewall (like Norton Internet Security). They all seem to really fuck up your system, in my experience, and there's no reason to replace a perfectly good software firewall anyway. If you're using commercial AV, make sure you've got a subscription or it's a waste. A lot of people swear by AVG or clamwin; I'm a fan of avast.

If you want extra tinfoil for your hat, you can make use of virtual machines (http://www.virtualbox.org/) or sandboxes (http://www.sandboxie.com/) to isolate activities from the main system. There's also RVS (http://www.returnilvirtualsystem.com/) and Windows SteadyState (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/sharedaccess/default.mspx) if you're just looking for a way to quickly restore your system if/when you believe it to be compromised.

Rather than be overly paranoid about security, I usually just make sure I can wipe my computer clean at any time with no risk of losing data. If I suspect something is wrong, I do a new install rather than screwing around trying to diagnose the issue. It's far more practical at work, but it's still not too bad at home.

Upvote for mentioning 'Raper Country'!

Anyone in Indiana and the Ohio border knows what I'm talking about.

I'm always afraid to use the rest area restrooms in Raper country..

John McCain's POW story

joedirt says...

For balance, from the PhoenixNewTimes story:
http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/1999-03-25/news/is-john-mccain-a-war-hero/

To say that Earl and Patty Hopper devote all of their waking hours to the POW/MIA issue would be just short of an overstatement. They travel the country in an RV, visiting other POW/MIA-niks, attending conferences, badgering government officials for more information about Earl Jr.

The Hoppers have located two former POWs who claim they were senior ranking officers at the time McCain says he was tortured in solitary confinement. Ted Guy and Gordon "Swede" Larson both tell New Times that while they could not guarantee that McCain was not physically harmed, they doubted it.
"Between the two of us, it's our belief, and to the best of our knowledge, that no prisoner was beaten or harmed physically in that camp [known as "The Plantation"]," Larson says. ". . . My only contention with the McCain deal is that while he was at The Plantation, to the best of my knowledge and Ted's knowledge, he was not physically abused in any way. No one was in that camp. It was the camp that people were released from."

joedirt says...

So fake. Those idiot boys of his that are so chickenhawk they ride around in an RV for the last 8 months (go to Iraq Romney boys) and it took them this long to "discover" soundboards, and then put a "hip" interwebz video out there.

Lame.
