I hate the smugness of Apple

Seric says...

Heh....David and Goliath effect?

With Apple now being richer than Microsoft, I'm not sure that's as relevant anymore.

I think the thing that bothers me about apple is that flaws aren't recognised amongst their fans.

A friend of mine owns a macbook and an iphone. If he goes on any webpage with flash on it his fans spin right up. He was using a shockwave flash application recently and said his CPU was at 160%. This laptop is maybe 2 or 3 years old. The only learnt recently that unless you void your warranty by jail-breaking it - the iphone doesn't let you change the background, which seems ridiculous when on my much less sophisticated sony ericsson, I have a custom made metal gear solid theme I made myself where I can customise everything from background to tab and font colour.

That moves me on nicely to my other quibble of how locked down apple products are. 'you can view videos in AMAZING quality on your ipad'. Perhaps....but you have to convert it into some proprietary format first. The shuffle needing licensed patented headphone parts for them to actually work with the device. What's that Seric? You'd like to use your new Sennheiser PX200-II's with this product? Too bad.

I mean...yes, Windows is with it's flaws too. But I can do what I want with it. (In before linux users, I have and use cygwin, that's good enough for me ) Well...I say I can do what I want, but last time I checked - I wasn't allowed to write programs for iphone/ipad on a Windows machine T____T.

Zero Punctuation: Heavy Rain

NetRunner says...

@Xax, buy yourself a PS3 slim, God of War 3, and Uncharted 2. Once you're done with those two games, buying the PS3 will seem like a damn smart idea, especially if you don't already have a bluray player.

Then you can do things like try Heavy Rain, Metal Gear Solid 4, Infamous, Ratchet & Clank Future, Resistance 2, and Gran Turismo 5 when it finally comes out.

Oh yeah, and Killzone 2, if you're into that sort of thing.

How Videogamers Are Ruining The Industry They Love

Shepppard says...

The video game industry is basically at a low at the moment, because there truly isn't anything new coming out.

My problem is that they seem to have lost their creativity and imagination. In the past however many years, the "Big Name" companies have had one idea and milked the shit out of it to make a crapton of money that they're only spending a fraction of to make sequels of the same game wrapped in a new pretty box.

Halo, Gears of War, Prince of Persia, Metal Gear, Hell, even Final Fantasy is starting to go downhill.
All of these titles have at least 3 games already in the franchise, or are soon going to, and each one basically had a steady decline in how good it was.

Whoever previously mentioned that the companies don't want to take risks basically hit the nail on the head. Very few are releasing something new, and even fewer look like they'd be fun.
The way I've always thought about it, a video game is like a book, or movie, just interactive.

A perfect example of this is from the Bioware games, The KOTOR series and Mass Effect are fantastic in the way they play out, because it's the exact same as a story, there's progression, there's conversation, there's reason to do what you're doing.

Take a game like Halo: Combat evolved, look at it, it was fantastic because as the storyline progressed, you learned about what happened, you found out who the covenant was and what their purpose was for finding the halo, and you learned the secret of the ring itself, That's a good progression.

Then you look at the second one.. The only thing new about it was the fact that there were now giant gorillas that wanted to eat your face, everything else was the same, nothing real new in the way of story or gameplay except you got slightly more overpowered, and the third is basically the same thing. I can't blame Bungie for Halo 3, there was never supposed to BE a halo 3, but MS pulled their funds before they could finish the final level which was supposed to close off the series and they were forced to make it.

My solution to this is to actually find people who write, authors who are willing to at least pitch ideas for games, and a studio that's willing to listen. If there's a company out there that could do that, the independent market could be almost abolished because the companies are hiring them on for ideas.

However, the "Reverend" Is right on one point, until we stop buying these rehashed games with a new number on the end, there won't BE anything new to buy. The companies will go for more of the same because people keep buying it.

Any gamers in the crowd? (Blog Entry by JiggaJonson)

NetRunner says...

I followed a similar path to JiggaJohnson, had a 2600, NES, SNES. After that I mostly ignored consoles, preferring PC games.

That lasted for a long time, until the buzz around God of War got so loud even the PC people were saying stuff about it. I bought a PS2, and then got totally sucked into what consoles had morphed into 2 generations past the SNES.

Now I'm back to a more balanced diet of games. Some PC, some console, they've all got great stuff to offer.

If you're a big PC shooter fan, you're depriving yourself by refusing to take Halo or Gears of War for a spin (or at least their latest incarnations). If you liked KOTOR, you need to play Mass Effect. If you liked Diablo, you should play God of War. To think someone would call them self a gamer without having tried Metal Gear Solid and then subsequently declared that they love or hate it with a passion...seems wrong to me. You're missing out if you've never played GTA, especially GTA4.

If anything games for the PC have become something of a niche market, mostly populated with shooters, MMO's, and RTS's (and all the shooters but Crysis are on the consoles too).

I also think anyone who's into gaming should look into Brutal Legend, and seriously consider picking up a 360.

Metal Gear Solid Theme - Eminence Orchestra

ant says...

>> ^mintbbb:
A few years ago (forgot when..) me and hubby went to see the 'Videogames Live' concert .. or whatever it was called. Music from games, played by the symphony, a choir.. I remember Martin Leung playing 'Castlevania' on a huge organ! THIS theme, something from WOW, Baba Yetu from Civ IV.. it was just amazing!!
The (theme) songs are just wonderful.. I had never played most of these games, and I was in awe for hearing them for the first time.. I never thought how important the music really is, and how wonderful it is!
BIG upvote!

Yep, VGL is awesome. http://aqfl.net/?q=node/5439 for my visit.

WTF is Watchmen

Abel_Prisc says...

lol It's pretty funny. Took me a sec to realize it's not real, but it all clicked when they claimed that guy was David Hayter. But the video gets it's point across, so many people are obsessing over this movie as if they've loved it forever. I too, unfortunately, have met people like this. I don't know shit about Watchmen, but I also don't parade as if I do.

Fun Fact: For those who didn't know- David Hayter, the co-writer of The Watchmen, is also the voice actor of Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid series.

yahtzee is good for a laugh and SOMETIMES brings up good points, but I would take advice on buying games from him. Anyone who loves Saints Row 2 and hates Metal Gear Solid 4 is just very opinionated, and not of a popular opinion either

I've played Saints Row but not the sequel (that's no coincidence, by the way). I understood his point about SR2 concentrating on ridiculous fun but it's not what I'm looking for.

MGS4 was total crap. Mind you, I wasn't surprised since MGS3 was total crap and MGS2 was total crap. I was impressed with just how spectacular they could make total crap, but the only enjoyment I got out of the game was from laughing at my roommate for dropping $600 for it. (He bought the PS3 just to play MGS4)
