Conflict in Israel and Palestine: Crash Course World History

dannym3141 says...

At this point, Israel are basically holding a midget at arm's length, kicking him in the balls with steel toe caps whilst Palestine slap ineffectually at their hand.

Israel has the capability to deal with the attacks on "their" land (let's not forget the UN recognise much of their occupation as illegal) without indiscriminate shelling of areas populated by MOSTLY innocent civilians. They are basically investing in future terrorism by choosing not to do so, giving themselves an excuse to elaborate on their prison camp which we refer to as Palestine.

You don't have to be FOR hamas to be AGAINST the killing of innocents, and i'm afraid Israel does the lion's (and the lioness', and the cubs') share of that. They can and should be better than retaliation.

Lioness jumps off a cliff to catch an antelope in mid-air

Everyone knows this, but it's different when it's happening right in front of you and taking you completely by surprise. I've seen a lion kill a zebra, right in front of our vehicle as close as these guys are to the action and it's completely different seeing it in the flesh as it is watching it in a video.

You can see the fear in the struggling prey. You can hear it gasping for breath and struggling to cry out. You can feel the power of the lioness. You can see the blood pumping out of the prey into the lion's mouth and running down it's side. Flesh being ripped from the prey while it's still panting its last.

It's a harrowing experience. Whether you know that they eat meat or not, if you're not moved watching this happen just feet from you then there's something wrong with you. It's a wild, exciting, horrible, awesome thing to see. Just because it's completely natural and normal for the lion doesn't mean that someone seeing it for the first time should feel comfortable watching it. It's not a comfortable thing to see.

Watching a cat catch a mouse is one thing, but lions are working on a human scale. It's doing what it could do to you. Seeing it for real is a massive adrenaline rush because your body is well aware that it shouldn't be that close to what's happening, even if your mind can overrule it, you still get the rush.

Anyone going on safari knows that lions eat other animals, it's one of the things people really want to see. When we saw it there was one young lady with us who couldn't watch because it upset her too much, and it's not because she was a wuss, it just really was upsetting to see. Doesn't mean she thought the lion shouldn't be doing it, it's not a moral judgement in the slightest, she just didn't want to watch an animal die like that.

RC Car with Camera Meets a Group of Lions

MilkmanDan says...

The lioness on the left in some of the group shots seems to have a blind right eye. Can't make out any damage around the socket, but it seems like there may be a scar on the left side of her head and a torn lip.

I had a cat that looked pretty roughed up like that after picking fights with coyotes. Tough ol' bastard. I wonder what that lion got on the bad side of?

Best Son Ever

robbersdog49 says...

My mother is a biology teacher and all my life she's shown me how fascinating the natural world is. It's become a real interest for me and shapes the way I live my life. When I got married my wife and I went to kenya on safari and saw some of the most beautiful and incredible wildlife. I remembered seeing lions and elephants in the zoo with my mother telling me all about them, to see them for real in the wild was mind blowing. I vividly remember how much my mother would love to see Africa. She could make the creepy crawlies under a rotting log fascinating, I just thought how wonderful lions, leopards and so on would be for her.

She's worked hard all her life and provided very well for my brother and I, we had a great upbringing and great opportunities but they never left enough for themselves. So last year my wife and I took her to Zambia. Highlight of the trip was tracking a lioness on foot and getting to within about fifty yards of it. Being able to share the experience with her was awesome. We're lucky enough to be able to afford it and it's the best money I've ever, ever spent.

If you can, you really should spoil your mother. They deserve it
