Obama: 'We're building Iron Man'

Rise of Electro (International) from Amazing Spider-Man 2

artician says...

The Superman 1978 film was an enigma, for being a superhero film that didn't absolutely suck.
Then there were the Burton Batman films, which had something special to them that made us feel comic films weren't horribly cheesy.
Then there was a break for a decade of suck, before the first X-men film found that missing link between fantasy and humanity that audiences could relate with on a realistic level. It was bolstered by the first Spiderman, and then the Iron Man film really cemented the legitimacy of comic-based films from there.
That's not even mentioning the Dark Knight films.
But has anyone noticed that gradual slide into mediocrity/laughability in the last few years/sequels? Everything since then has lost that human element that could make us relate to the protagonists and suspend our disbelief, and for me it's felt that everything in this genre has slid backwards to that immature and unrealistic setting.
Meh.

Snowden Scolds US Policy

poolcleaner says...

You and Iron Man can go fuck yourselves. Civil War! jk, I just like science fiction. I get it, SHIELD is just doing its job and they can't tell us the real reasons why.

The Rising Tide is evil and sounds a lot like a Hydra conspiracy. Cthulhu = cephalopod = rising out of the ocean = cephalopod = Hydra

Snowden works for Hydra! Or is he a double agent?

VoodooV said:

Yeah you don't get to ignore a trial simply because you don't think it will be fair. Every criminal ever would be justified in fleeing the law in such a case.

I noticed you didn't answer my question.

We don't abide fleeing the law in any other situation, How come this is different?

We don't live in a country where we pick and choose the laws we want to follow.

Besides, turning himself in is win win. Snowden is virtually guaranteed that he will only die of old age because if anything happens to him, the US will be blamed.

His case is stronger if he turns himself in and argues his case. Fleeing hurts him.

Also, I hate to break it to you. Snowden's fleeing didn't create the public outcry you expected. The jury is in on this. Thanks to GPS and smartphones and other apps that use personal information. The public really doesn't have a lot of problem with being eavesdropped on. Most people already knew it was happening Congratulations, you created numerous internet memes but no actual change.

Attitudes on privacy are changing. Sorry you didn't get the memo.

Elon Musk designs 3D rocket parts with his hands in the air

Velocity5 says...

1. Industrial design of this type is more about math and data, not about intuitive understanding.

So controlling things with your hands looks like a gimmick which would be useless for power-users. For power-users, their mouse and keyboard shortcuts become extensions of their mind.

2. I had no idea we can 3d print now using titanium, rather than just plastic

That part really does conjure up the Iron Man movies... the lone designer designing and printing in his garage without needing to wait for a titanium factory 10,000 miles away to create your prototype and ship it to you.

Honest Trailers - Iron Man 3

VoodooV says...

What I don't get is how Hollywood has apparently ignored the lesson of Spiderman 3 where they simply tried to do WAY too much in one movie and unsuccessfully tried to pull off 3 villain plots.

Iron Man 3 was just all over the place, The extremis plot, the Mandarin plot, Tony's little mental breakdown thing, the kid sidekick thing. It was so unfocused. Instead of doing one story well, they tried to pull of 3-4 stories poorly.

Maya Hansen was pretty crucial to the comic book Extremis story, but in the movie she was completely useless and was nothing but another woman for Tony to flirt with.

I equally liked and disliked the sudden character change of The Mandarin. I'm not at all invested in the Iron Man comics so I didn't care on that front, it was a cool little twist and the goofy character was fun.
However, Kingsley also did such an amazingly intimidating and fearful character I would love to have seen how it would've played out without putting in the twist.

Overall Iron Man 3 sucked, too much unnecessary plot complexity. Sometimes (more often than not, actually) a simple, straight forward plot works best for these sorts of films. Here is the bad guy, here is the good guy, have at it! I'm disappointed and surprised, I had much more faith in Shane Black.

Iron Man 3: the spolier

yes and no, yeah I completely agree that Iron Man's rogues gallery is dated, but as I said in Honest Trailers, Mandarin deserved better. While I understand why they did it, to avoid the obvious racial stereotype. It was just stupid. Kingsley was so annoying. The whole Mandarin thing should have been scrapped.

You really aught to read the Extremis comic, they even made a motion comic of it. At one point, it was on Netflix.(sadly looks like it was removed, boo).

It posed some serious questions about where technology (and biotechnology) is heading. But that's probably why it was bastardized in the movie. No one cares about serious shit in a summer blockbuster, they just want pew pew pew. Which again, yeah, I understand.

You're right though, @ChaosEngine my foreknowledge of Extremis and my fandom of Iron Man since I was...13?? definitely colors my opinions. Had I not known about those stories, I probably would have enjoyed it more.

Still, even despite all that, movie still was grasping hard by putting in the kid sidekick and yeah, as the Honest Trailers pointed out, for some reason, the Iron Man suits were particularly crappy this time around among other really stupid choices the movie made.

@VoodooV, nooooo! Say it ain't so.... we can make up...

I would call myself a low level comics geek in that I'm reasonably well versed, but I don't follow everything and Iron Man was always just below my radar in comic form. So (unusually for me), my first real exposure to Iron Man was the movie...
and I loved it. It was just such a nice break to see a superhero movie that was having fun with the premise. Don't get me wrong, Nolan's Batman movies are awesome (well, the first two certainly), but variety is nice.

So I had no investment in the characters or existing storylines, and maybe if I did I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much.

That said, I still think it was an interesting take.

and I think this (shameless plug) *related= http://videosift.com/video/Iron-Man-3-the-spolier sums it up well for me.
