How to open a door - Finnish instructional video from 1979

NYPD Blue - This Is A Workin' Man, He's Not Stickin' Nobody

cloudballoon says...

That's just fantasy. Name ONE TV cop shows that's not PR for the Blues? At best, I hope this clip serves as an instructional video for the IRL cops. At worst, it's pure whitewash.

I pretty much watch any type of TV BUT cops shows except the British ones and the mystery whodunit mini-series like the recent Mare of Easttown.

I'm extremely glad that I live in Canada, and I live in a Toronto suburb, I don't need to fear police officers because I don't see them walking beats on main streets, they're just usually in their cruisers and/or hiding around dark/down-hill intersections to catch speeding cars. But Toronto downtown is another story I think, I see the occational news reports of police harrassment of PoC just like those in the US. But far, far less fatal.

Deal, but it's not the Tarantino you're thinking of.

Getting the most out of factory downtime

moonsammy says...

I actually thought it might be some weird parody - I'm bad with faces and the thumbnail looked like Maya Rudolph. Realized immediately it was... not what I'd hoped for.

Now, you give me an instructional video on Rockwell Automation's Retro Encabulator, I'm fuckin' riveted.

While I’m sure everyone is excited to delve into the intricacies of refinery maintenance logistics, why do I feel like some upvotes are more about the presenter than the presentation?

Breakfast

I enjoyed it even before the editing started.

What the hell kind of an instructional video is that?! "Don't eat your breakfast in the middle of the street."

High quality ice making

CrushBug says...

And honestly, you can search YouTube and Amazon and find the instructional videos and molds to do this yourself. Probably top out at about $20.

$6.50 per ice cube.

Some people clearly have too much money and need some of it removed, as they do not know how to use it responsibly.

YouTube Video channels or persons that "Grind Your Gears" (Internet Talk Post)

radx says...

I can't come up with any YT channel or person that annoys me, really. But I only know a handful, so...

As for video styles, well, anyone who shoves his/her face into the camera or seems hyperactive. Not my kinda thing. Any instructional video that focuses more on the person than the actual subject.

Ian of ForgottenWeapons.com has a style I rather like. Composed, focused on the subject, very informative, bit of comedy -- no yelling, no twitching, no music, all business.

Women Sportswriters do the Mean Tweets thing

bareboards2 says...

I did not get that impression at all. In fact, what I saw were some truly kind people unable to say despicable things directly to two women who they admired and liked.

Do you really think they would have no compassion towards to a man who had been raped, and who then made themselves vulnerable to the general public by revealing that rape to advance a discussion?

I'm sure there are some men who have been shamed about their feelings their whole lives that they would joke in that moment. I can see that happening. A defensive nervous joke to mask the pain. To deflect the discomfort.

It wouldn't be funny though. Not funny at all.

These types of instructional videos aren't meant to be perfect. They are meant to instruct. You can pick them apart, and minimize the impact by saying all these rationalizations.

I'll tell my reaction. I cried. I cried for these men who so obviously did not want to say those things directly to the living breathing person sitting in front of them. They weren't thinking. They were feeling and reacting like the humans they are.

00Scud00 said:

And if they were reading these back to another dude, especially the ones involving generic violence I bet they would have no trouble looking him in the eye while reading them. They might even joke about it.
I have to wonder if the discomfort comes entirely from the material they are reading or is it also from the realization that they're on camera reading this. And if people decide they are not showing the proper level of shame or guilt then there will be an internet lynch mob waiting for them the next time they log on.

Santa Ana Cops Behaving Badly

radx says...

Help an ignorant European brother out, will you...

This shop operated without a business permit. Would the appropriate procedure not be:
- official delivers notification that shop will be closed down if operator doesn't acquire permit within a week
- official returns after week if owner failed to acquire and present permit, cites owner for operating without a permit and gives another 48h deadline
- official returns after 48h and, if the owner still cannot produce a permit, notification is given that shop will be closed down
- police calmly evacuate the building, take photographic evidence of current state, close shop until end of legal proceedings

Instead, what I saw on the video might pass as an instructional video for the ‛Ndrangheta but not for a police force in a civilized country. These people strike me as unfit for duty and the brazen nonchalance with which they consumed the drugs themselves in front of other officers might be a reasonable argument to put the entire department under investigation.

Gym Fail - Horizontal Rowing

Why do mirrors flip horizontally (but not vertically)?

Sagemind says...

I'm not really sure why this needs explaining.
There isn't anything here that isn't completely obvious.

What is great about this video is that she must have been confused herself, and had this big realization, prompting her to make this instructional video on mirrors.

I'm generally surprised when people make instructional videos on mundane, every day stuff that we all already know, and have known most of our lives.
