VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Video Page (Sift Talk Post)

lucky760 says...

The site channels and FAQ are now fully available within the header navigation, along with the Search function (which is under Watch).

Account preferences are also viewable and editable within the header, under your username which was added as a tab and when clicked that, it will take you to your profile.

@blackfox42 - Fixed that link to opt back in, so it should work for you now.

@Baristan - That sounds good in theory (and I thought so in the distant past), but in practice it makes the site effectively unusable.

@eric3579 - I know there are lots of things you (and others) were bound to have issues with. As I explained in my dissertation, that's part of the point of doing this, to hear from you all what's wrong or what's missing or what should change. For example, being unable to click a menu tab to actually go somewhere can be fixed by adding a link in the sub-menu (or something).

To you and @newtboy, a big point about all the new header content is that you can now see all that information and even more all in that one area without searching all over the page for it.

Good feedback about the font. I've changed it and I think it's much better.

The video voters and who's viewing are currently excluded, but (yet again), that's part of the point of this beta test. If everyone feels they need to be added back in, then we (meaning dag and myself or us all as a community) can consider how we should include those things. (If/when they're added back in, it'll only be for logged-in members.)

@newtboy - Not everything everyone is noticing is intended to be that way. The indication that you voted on a comment wasn't supposed to be missing. And it's fixed now.

The opt out link is in the footer of the new video page, however to you and everyone else, I'd request and encourage that you stick with the beta test for a couple of days if you can bear it to at the very least try to help us with more, fuller feedback once you've become a little more accustomed to the changes.

Thanks for the feedback so far everyone. Keep it coming.

@eric3579 Please read the third paragraph and this post's title.

@gorillaman Thanks for the surprisingly positive feedback. That's a small victory by itself.

@MilkmanDan Thanks for being so respectful with your negative feedback. No worries at all about sharing your true reaction and thoughts. Aversion to change is expected. All I'll try to clarify is that everything isn't harder to figure out now; all the old content you're referring to is now neatly tucked centrally in the easily accessible header menu.

@enoch Thanks for the kind feedback!

@blackfox42 Whoops! The edit link is one of the things excluded accidentally. I'll work on adding it back in asap. To opt back in use the link at the bottom of this ST post body.

Her Neighbor got a New Car - It Blows Flames.

I can agree with that, but it's also sacrilegious to drive one in your neighborhood. I mean, I can run my Jeep with open headers and be a loud obnoxious dickhead that sets off car alarms as I pass too, but why? No problem with this on the track, at the show, or in his garage, but on the street it's not just obnoxious, it's dangerous...I'm certain that is loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage to anyone on the sidewalk or in the street...and that's bad...MmmmmK?

You don't put a muffler on a 1500HP (ish) Merlin/Meteor engine man, it's sacrilegious!

I'm sure that's one of the ten commandments.... (if not it was clearly an oversight on God's part)

What's funny is that teenagers don't appear to do this anymore; they may "touch" their parent's PC---then build a gaming PC---but it's been forever since I remember hearing about a teenager who spent 2 weeks building part of a car's headers or exhaust system...

Either he lied to you or their retention is not very high. Possessing the amount of storage it would take just to log packet headers for all internet communications is would be an 8th Wonder of the World kinda feat. Keeping the actual data would be practically impossible.

I dated a woman who's uncle was retired from the CIA. Around 2001 or so, in a candid, personal conversation, well after he'd retired, he told us that every piece of data, without exception, sent over "computer networks", was backed up by the government/CIA (I lump them together despite history showing their disparity).

Eddie Huang exposes TED Conference

ponceleon says...

FYI, I caught the full podcast over the weekend and I have to say that the Eddie is a total douche-bag, prone to hyperbole, and oftentimes just uneducated about stuff (you should have heard his brilliance when Joe stated talking about terraforming and life on Mars).

I should point out that I am a Joe Rogan fan, or at least, I enjoy his podcast. Joe may be a tremendous stoner and spends WAY too much time talking about drugs, but he is also VERY well read and can be incredibly insightful at times. Some of his podcasts are really amazing. This one... not so much. I've enjoyed some of VICE's shtick (especially when they went to North Korea), but they really are self-important, HEEEEY MAAAAN, douches and hearing this guy really brought out the worst about them...

Unless someone else gives me further evidence, I'm putting this report of the TED "cult" under the "suspect" header.

Eric Winston Tears into Fans Who Cheered Quarterbacks Injury

Yogi says...

@JiggaJonson, you still haven't gotten why they were cheering losing their own quarterback. It had nothing to do with cheering a hit. It had to do with being happy their shitty QB wouldn't be starting anymore. It's not bloodthirstiness. It's a roster issue.
@Yogi, people die from playing all sports every year. That's my point. Soccer is often considered the worst for concussions (as repeated low level concussions are more problematic than single big ones given time to heal) and cardiac arrest concerns (talk about over exertion) and basketball is often considered the worst for overall injuries (e.g. joints). I don't think football is unique in this regard, and at least they are trying to make rule changes to do something about it. If you want to stop concussions, don't allow headers in soccer, or make them all wear helmets and padding. Go ahead and see how that flies with their fans.
Finally, why is this guy wrong to criticize fans for cheering an injured human being? Because of your stereotyping of football fans? That's a specious argument to say the least.

He's wrong because they're the customer. If he doesn't like the customers demands he should pack it in. The point is he's saying this isn't the Roman Colosseum when it clearly is, because the fans decide what they cheer and they've been cheering big injuries for awhile now. They're the blood thirsty mob, if you don't like it than don't participate. I didn't play my senior year of High School Football, largely because I was congratulated by half the defense after injuring the other teams QB so badly he needed to be Airlifted off the field in case of paralyzation. He got up luckily, we got to see a Helicopter land and take off on our field.

High School coaches have always taught kids how to hurt the opponent, you've done a good thing if you put their star player out of the game. This is the sport, this is how it works.

QVC Host has a Problem

probie says...

My guess is she either had a TIA or stroke. It could have been cardiac, but she doesn't appear to be in any discomfort up until the moment it happened. This definitely looked more neurological. Could be the vagus nerve too, that'll cause you to take a header into the ground. Hope she's ok.

Edit: Guess this has happened to her before on QVC. I hope she finds a good neurologist cause she's certainly having issues.

Inline bug report... There's 5 replies to my comment in this thread and I got exactly zero emails about them. The only reason I even noticed is because Obsidian's comment is in the Top Comments block.

I too've been getting emails every day. Check your spam folder and if you find emails there, please forward it with all the original headers to siftbot at videosift dot com.

Considering how long I was an Exchange admin, I'm kinda embarrassed I had to be told to check spam. There's a whole pile; I'll forward them momentarily.

Glad it was enough time that you are now mature enough to admit your oversight.
