Thanks. I managed to brighten my monitor. That helps. And darkening the fonts has helped some, too.

What is interesting to me is that I have no trouble with the darkness of the fonts when I am WRITING a comment. Right now, your quote and my text is just fine.

But when I hit "submit", the letters get "fatter" and grayer and even on the white background, they play as gray and not black like they are right at this moment (which I like, the darkness of the font right now.)

Thanks for your help. I think I am just going to have to live with this.

I've just darkened all the page fonts a couple more shades (in the light theme).

Hopefully that will help your old eyes, but you should definitely look into adjusting your monitor because it sounds like it really needs tweaking.

Gray on green then.

The contrast just isn't very good for old eyes.

Is there any chance of a black font instead of these colored fonts? Everything is pretty to look at, soft and gentle -- and hell to read for any length of time.

I do need examples, thanks. However, I'm not seeing any gray on blue. The comment you referenced has a green background, so I don't know where the gray on blue might be. Any chance you can give me a screenshot of what you're seeing? Are you using light or dark?

Let's talk about *Promote (Sift Talk Post)

Boise_Lib says...

Well first off--now I see an answer to my question,

"Why the hell are they wasting top-of-the-page space?"

I don't see three promoted videos in a line; I see two videos and a third one below and to the left, leaving a big hole below and to the right.

I agree with @bareboards2, @eric3579, @ctrlaltbleach, @Sagemind, et al. And @spoco2's dissection is spot on.

I also have a problem with the crosshatching. I don't know the optical reasons, but the gray on gray crosshatch is like lasers in my eyeballs. Maybe color is part of it? I know the conspiracy tag is completely unreadable to me now.

I love this place and remember my fevered consternation when--in the past--the site was down for me. But I've had to go elsewhere recently just because of eyestrain.

Thanks, guys. We're getting there.
I'm like @bareboards2 (comment above), I've had to cut back on Vs viewing time because of eyestrain. The font is bigger--and therefore better--but the dark gray on light gray (see quoted text below) is still an eye killer for an old fart like me.

Lucky has tweaked the fonts to make them bigger and more readable. Let me know if this works for people having trouble.

Well, I am going to have to take a break from the Sift until this contrast issue is resolved. Which I hope is in the plans (I know you are getting lots of bug reports, much more important than this.)

It has gotten to the point that I come to the Sift and I have a headache within five minutes of straining to read. And I haven't even been here all that much -- I've been conditioned, I guess, over the past four days.

Grey on gray (and green). I'm dying here. (Why not black letters? Why the gray letters? I don't understand.... is it something to do with the mobile version? Does it look better there?)

Anyway. I guess I am on hiatus for awhile.... Rats.

Why not just copy Reddit's way of doing things for the most part but then make the community aspect better?

In the end video sift is shit compared to Reddit when it comes to how much content you can brows quickly and how tidy it is organized.

What video sift does have over Reddit is a more focused community and more focused videos/grouping of videos and persistence of themed organisation , so that's what the new design should most focus on fostering.

I think its also better to have things on separate pages well designed pages , rather than have windows load within windows its a total mess writing this comment I have a comment scroll bar + a comment section scroll bar + the main webpage scroll bar.
Also Gray txt on greyish background ?

Not that it matters I'm not paying for video sift

What should the default color scheme of VideoSift be? (User Poll by dag)

bareboards2 says...

Wherever you end up, the contrast between background and text really needs to be stronger. It really shouldn't be a strain to read anything.

And the blue text on the light textured background of the Top Sifts area literally shimmers for me. I do hope that at least is fixed.

My personal preference is the light background. I physically feel pushed away with the dark.

But this is not about my personal preference -- it is about the casual visitor. As a constant user, I can choose my preference of light over dark (once you fix the contrast, oh please, oh please No gray letters!!!). I

I would go with the industry standard for the casual user, and most websites have a lighter background. What is the message you want to send to a casual user? The dark has a specific message, the light has a specific message. Which do you want to convey?

Hey Deano - old school Sifter - thanks for the feedback.

We've already gotten some compounding feedback that the text size might be an issue for us gray beards - it's definitely something we can look at tweaking.

I know you won't be alone on giving us flack on the three promoted videos - but let's see how we go. The downside of the unlimited promotes is that we sometimes, during peak hours had a wall full of them. We need to strike a balance.

Channel features and filtering is something that will trickle in as we bed down the new site.

Ah , well I wasn't expecting this! What is that, parchment in the background? Or my crazy monitor again?

I like a refresh but it will take time to bed in with me.

In the meantime I do worry about the teeny channel labels and hard to see text. Speaking for the elderly and hard of seeing this is a concern.

Showing only the last 3 promoted videos? Hmmm....

Also no love for channel owners? Was hoping to see some new features there. And I can't see how to find new channel submissions. Clicking on a channel shows the latest videos but Upcoming just shows everything.

Are the old RSS feeds broken?

I would also like a *complete" listing of all videos on a channel.

Also there are filtering options for Upcoming videos but none for sifted ones. Said it before we need easy filtering options whenever there is a list of videos.

How to swordfight like a true Viking

MilkmanDan says...

>> ^mentality:
Isn't high level fencing aggressive because it doesn't matter if your opponent hits you as long as you hit them first? That sort of scoring system seems to naturally favor the one with the aggression and initiative.

Generally yes, it doesn't matter if your opponent hits you as long as you hit them first. There are "right of way" rules to establish who has the initiative and the right to attack, and in fencing as a sport there are actually judges to make rulings on whether or not a touch should be thrown out because the attacker didn't have the right of way. It can get confusing.

Basically, whoever attacks first takes the right of way, but their opponent can take it back by successfully making a parry. It gets gray when both people attack at nearly the same time, their swords/foils/whatever touch but not enough to deflect a touch, and both attacks hit. Usually they wear vests with sensors to light up and say who got hit first, but I think a judge can overrule that if they think that the person that got hit first had tried to parry/riposte the original attack.

I'd tend to say that just further explains my stance that it can't really be "realistic"; if it were an actual duel we wouldn't need judges and electric vests to say that person A or B touched first and therefore "won". Instead, they'd both be dead and we could safely say they both lost.
