We can only hope they realize they are starting it with their grandchildren's future. But then again there is always that meteor with our name on it.

Where are all the superheros when you need them? Welcome to the machine.

It's an awesome machine.

Seriously though, is this the best we can do with that engine? What's with the ecological disaster every time it's started?

Maybe we could replace the engine with a forest fire.
It would be less polluting if they just ran it with an oil spill.
If only they can figure out how to start it by clubbing baby seals.
Instead of a pony engine can we just inject children with cancer?

so it's a regular electric guitar with a bunch of extra strings that are hardly ever touched?
I'm not an expert but I couldn't hear anything that couldn't be replicated with 1 or 2 effects pedals...

Russian parents made you learn Piano? Improvise!

FlowersInHisHair says...

Well, yes, a guitar can do things that a piano can't and the pitch-shifter doesn't quite achieve the right timbre but the point is that he's adapted a piano to sound like a fairly convincing facsimile of an electric guitar; the playing of the piece is secondary to that. The achievement is how much the piano now sounds like an electric guitar, given how different the instruments are. It's not a bad version of that guitar solo, it's a good version of the solo considering it's being played on an instrument that's normally unsuitable for playing it.

He's essentially playing a bad version of that guitar solo.

100 Amazing bass lines - Davie504

ChaosEngine says...

Interesting to see that compared to a guitar version of one of these, there's a lot more soul and funk.

BTW "Treat Her Right" was a Roy Head song, The Commitments were a fictional band and just did covers, and the very first song (Seven Nation Army) doesn't actually have a bass guitar in it (it's an electric guitar through a Digitech Whammy pedal down an octave).

Still the 4 string guys don't get nearly enough recognition, so *promote the low end!

edit: just finished watching.. no The Chain?!!?! WTF, dude!! give me back my promote, you couldnt-handle-six-strings bastard!

FFS! You are playing one of the best metal tracks ever written and you look like you are waiting in line for a freaking dentist! geez!

And electric guitar is cheating.

Have you ever heard of a baritone guitar? It sounds awesome!

CreamK says...

I modified my electric guitar to accept baritone tuning not so long ago. I really like the low grunt and the fact that i have more space between regular and bass guitar.

TEDTalks | Beardyman: The polyphonic me

Procrastinatron says...

That's an interesting point. In a way, it could be argued that the skill needed in order to make any given instrument produce whatever it is that you've got in your head could represent a sort of ideational friction. Beardyman has obviously spent most his life practicing with his voice, and as such, his voice has become his instrument of choice. However, as he pointed out, he eventually realized that his voicebox simply wouldn't be able to do all the things he wanted it to do, and because this was an issue of biology, there was no linear path through this particular obstacle.

So he had to get a bit lateral instead.

And really, the same goes for guitars. They started out accoustic, but then somebody decided that he wanted to do more with them; and thus the electric guitar was born.

Creative people of all stripes tend to spend their lives looking for a high-fidelity method of getting the stuff inside their heads into everybody else's heads, and Beardyman is no different in that regard.

ChaosEngine said:

It's cool and impressive and so on, but I'm still not sure what the point is?

He talks about being able to replicate "the sound in his head". Ok, cool. Musicians have been trying to do that for years. Electric guitarists, for instance, can spend hours/weeks/months tweaking settings on a dizzying array of gear to produce the sound they want. But ultimately, the expression of the music still comes from the guitar, from the physical manipulation and vibration of the strings.

I have no problem with Beardyman using his voice as an instrument, or even manipulating it, looping it or whatever. But surely there comes a point where the manipulation is so extreme that the "source" is lost, i.e. there is nothing about the output that is affected by the input. At which point, I have to ask, why bother with voice as an input in the first place? Why not just use a wave generator?

Actually, I think I might have answered my own question. I guess it's the fact that his voice is an easily manipulatable starting point.

Voodoo Chile by Hendrix - Live

MilkmanDan says...

I was curious about this question also. The strings are intriguing to me because wikipedia says the instrument traditionally uses silk strings, but they look like catgut and sound like nylon to me. My best guess is that they are actually nylon, so the pickups would have to be piezo/microphone type things instead of magnetic pickups like for an electric guitar.

A piezoelectric pickup (one of a few options for acoustic guitar amplification) just looks like a small disc, so that could be tucked away someplace not highly visible on her instrument which would explain why we can't readily see it. So, that's my best guess but I could easily be wrong.

Just curious. On a technical note, where is the electrical pickup on this instrument? I see that there is a patch cord plugged in to the side but don't see a visible pick up. Forgive my ignorance on the gayageum.

Secret Of The Sea - Billy Bragg & Wilco

oritteropo says...

I first heard of Billy Bragg in the 80s, my music teacher told tales of this mad English guy who got up on stage with an amp, an electric guitar, and half sang half screamed really subversive folk songs.

He seems to have calmed down a bit since then.

cripes.. it's common policy to look for ways to bring stuff into a channel when it's new to sort of spread the word about a new channel option. Contrary to what @xxovercastxx said in his original comment, "frankenstein" himself is within the guidelines of the new "undead" channel. "Things that are alive that shouldn't be" sort of deal. Why isn't anyone upset that the cat ISN'T REALLY FRANKENSTEIN, HEY NORSUELFANTTI YOU BETTER GET IN HERE AND FIX YOUR MISLEADING TITLE
I didn't see anyone getting butthurt over this:

so I went with a similar gag.

HEY! Isn't frankenstein...... undead!?
also quality

seriously, who upvoted this? are you guys all in some sort of channel ruining gang?

Way I see it you very probably should not be tagging videos simply based on words in the title. If I clicked the Undead channel I would honestly not expect to see this video.
To hammer home the point, imagine there's an electric guitar in the background - do we tag that then as Rock?

The levels of the electric guitar + drums seem wrong and overall the track sounds really murky If this was remastered so the electric guitar was crisp and each component stood out with quit abit of distance between the violin and the electric guitar then it would be 100x better , To me the whole track sounds as if i'm listening to it with a pillow on my head.
Be fun to hear a amiga/c64 version of this track.

the two people who appear in this weren't in collaboration with each other. They were two separate videos (The one guy on violin, and the other on guitar) and a third party spliced them together, so I don't expect the music to be stellar.

However, the fact is that it still sounds pretty freaking epic. I have no problems with the sound quality, and my headset is currently a piece of shit.
