I think you're living in a dream world. The abolition of slavery is only a generation removed, do you really think that many of these people have had the same opportunities as you have? Whether it be by design, by accident or what have you? I imagine your close ancestors were allowed to accumulate property and status in a way that their ancestors weren't.

I'm with you on Awake. The psychological aspect is a really great concept, but it's not enough to carry the show because after the first episode it's just matter-of-fact. It also gets a bit stale when you realize every episode is following the same recipe and we'll never make any progress into what's really going on with him.

Plus, the writers pulled a weird move by essentially proving that one of his dream worlds is reality by showing some nefarious characters having a private meeting (without the dreamer's knowledge, mind you) and discussing things of which the dreamer has no knowledge.

I think I'd like it more if they just proved that they are not dreams and that he's really awakening into a full-fledged alternate universe every time he opens his eyes.

Aside from Awake, I just finished Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. Both are spectacular and I highly recommend them.

Except the link that you posted doesn't compare wages by "equivalents". It compares what public employees make with the entire private sector. Well, serving big macs and pumping gas are certainly important jobs, but the jobs in the public sector are more specialized, and so they mostly require educated people.

The "study" that you linked to was created by an organization of business people who's whole purpose is to show exactly what they wanted. That is: to imply that public sector employees make more money. When you compare for equivalent jobs, and add education into the mix, there's no study you can site that shows that public employees earn more. Except for maybe custodians, and good for them, they deserve it. Most private employers I know would rather bitch about immigration during the day, and pay people an illegal wage to clean up their shit at night when no one is looking.

And the second "study" you link to, also created by a partisan, republican think-tank to present their opinions as facts, is exactly the same. One of the most interesting things completely left out of the equation is that they're including the benefits of public employees who are already retired, and who accumulated those benefits on a scale that is drastically different from the one used for employees today. Here, in Oregon, those people with tier one P.E.R.S (public employee retirement system) benefits are retiring right now, or have already retired. The "public" have decided over the last decade or so, that since those people worked their entire lives on a promise of those benefits, it would be dishonest to take them away and treat those employees entire lives of service as garbage. Maybe you feel differently. Either way, employees are paid on, and accrue benefits on, a scale that offers much, much less than the old. That's what should be taken into account regarding current wages in any study of current pay, but it's not. And there are a million non-partisan peer responses out there that show that for all the education data they use, their conclusions are false. Look them up yourself if you're so interested in facts.

The thing that really amazes me about your fight to screw people out of their promised wages to make life easier for yourself without actually having to do hard work for it is this: In the AEI study, which looks more credible than the first (but should still be seen as inflated at best, considering the authors) the amount the taxpayers could save by screwing over fellow citizens is... :

You will notice that Illinois’ budget is NOT dominated by a big line item of ‘subsidies to big business’. The budget is dominated by government spending on unions, union benefits, and entitlements. The only way to ‘fix’ such a budget is to cut the spending. Really. Because for every 12 people living in Illinois, there is one full-time salaried government worker pulling a higher wage, more benefits, and a better retirement than the people paying for him. Such a system is economically impossible to support. And there is plenty of evidence that such systems will ALWAYS collapse because of ineffiency. To say public unions have 'nothing' to do with the economic shortfalls is just factually incorrect. The links above prove it. Illinois has entire sections of its budget dominated by union issues, and union contracts repeatedly block any attempts at reform.

But regardless... Sure. Cut federal defense spending. And while we are at it, we should also cut Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and every other program. Cut them all. Slash them by 33% across the board. No exceptions. No mercy. But anyone that thinks that the only place we need to cut is ‘defense’ and that’ll fix it all it living in a dream world.

For example – how is cutting defense spending going to help Illinois? Or California? Or New Jersey? Or let’s take it national. Greece’s defense spending was a measley 3.4%. Explain how they would solve their massive budget shortfall by cutting defense. Or the US… Even if you cut US defense spending to zero, our current deficit is over 1.4 trillion. Defense to zero? 700 billion. Only HALF of just the deficit. It doesn’t even touch the 14 trillion in debt the nation already has. Or the further SEVENTY trillion in debt we have to cover all the 'unfunded liabilites' of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

At some point all the prog-libs out there are going to have to accept the facts. You can’t close the massive budget shortfalls that cities, states, and nations have with defense cuts. The problem is not defense. It is not ‘big business’. The problem is that governments are overspending on unsustainable public employee packages and entitlements that have no reasonable expecation of ever being paid for.

Philosophical certainty is the only kind I really care about. And I still don't suppose that God "isn't in certain places" is a true statement if you can't be certain about your certainty, then you aren't certain...thats for certain...wait what? I am not a theist mind you, but I am not certain that God doesn't or can't exist.

I mean, what is the say that the reason that gravity is the way it is and particles move in waves instead of lines aren't just the rules in God's head; that this is just a reality matrix of rules that exist in a beings mind...same thing he supposes in the video. Such would also be unverifiable, but true. That is my main problem with empirical inquiring as a method for truth, it has a limited number of predicates to deal with, and some subjects it can't address.

I admit, my mindset is a minority. I care about truth with a capital T. Most are just focused on limited understandings that make medicines and build spaceships, cool stuff mind you! For me, I much rather focus on what can be called certain, and certainly not. And for the most part, I have to rule that certainty in either case is lacking. As such, I am compelled to believe neither.

We don't see exactly eye to eye on this, but I will still let you touch my man cleavage.

In a complete aside, I had a dream where all the matter, energy, and "stuff" in this universe was actually just an abstraction of some other universe...like we were just a shadow of a reality that existed elsewhere. And there were special beings that could infiltrate this universe and hide. A war broke out between those taking refuge in the "dream world", and they would dodge back and for to reality to affect the dream world in ways that were desirable. Kind of maxrixy, fun stuff!

The reason I bring it up is much like Newton and Einstein point out, we seem to be trapped in perspective. The objectivity of science is really just group subjectiveness. Our individual experience of A is similarly described. So let us all call our experience of A, A prime and just refer to it as an objective event. It works when you want to build a building, but is isn't certainly true. And that defines one of my main problems with most empirical discovery. If you don't see a problem with it, well, then I just care about a different set of truths

I find it even more interesting having gone back and found a previous thread where blankfist and I went over exactly this, only in theory. He stated:

I dunno. I consider myself a real Nolan fan, yet I never liked Memento, and don't rate Inception extremely high either. I feel both movies focus far too much on mechanics. I kinda felt this way about Inception too. It felt like it was the dramatic conclusion of a trilogy, except for budget reasons they never made the first two films, and therefore were forced to explain a huge amount of the universe's mechanics through exposition.

That, and I wondered why so much of the action was utterly conventional fistfights, gunplay, and car chases, and not nearly so much about the really wacky kinds of things a dream world can do.

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus was a lot more in line with what I would expect a dream world to look like. In Inception, it seemed so dreadfully drab and realistic, like it was the Matrix, not a dream world.
